Acclaimed novelist ("Americanah") whose essays and talks offer sharp critiques of culture and feminism.

Gina Rodriguez, widely recognized for her roles in front of the camera, is embarking on a new creative journey, stepping into the director's chair for the upcoming boxing film, "House of Guerrero." This project, co-produced by her former "Jane the Virgin" co-star Justin Baldoni, represents a powerful collaboration poised to bring an authentic and impactful narrative to the screen.

Championing Authentic Narratives: The 'House of Guerrero' Story

A Visionary Debut: Gina Rodriguez's Transition to Directing

Actress Gina Rodriguez is making a significant shift in her career, undertaking her first feature film as a director with "House of Guerrero." This boxing-themed movie is currently in its pre-production phase, with the cast yet to be revealed. The screenplay was penned by Bernardo Cubría, known for his work on "Acapulco."

The Production Team Behind 'House of Guerrero'

The film boasts a robust production team, including Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla representing 1Community, and Molly Breeskin from Rodriguez's I Can And I Will Productions. Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof are also producing through Wayfarer Studios. Financial backing for the project comes from Wayfarer Studios, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group, and Clare LoCicero, with additional tax credit financing provided by Three Point Capital.

The Narrative Core: A Boxer's Redemption Story

"House of Guerrero" draws from an original concept developed by Rodriguez and Cubría. The plot centers on a once-promising young boxer's endeavor to reclaim his past glory in the ring and rebuild his life. To ensure authentic fight sequences, Clayton J. Barber, celebrated for his contributions to "Creed III," and Eric Brown, recognized for his work on "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum," are choreographing the film's combat scenes.

Executive Leadership and Global Distribution

The executive producer roster includes Steve Sarowitz and Jamey Heath from Wayfarer, alongside Sherrese Clarke and Niija Kuykendall representing HarbourView Media Group. Clare LoCicero and Alice S. Kim also serve as executive producers. UTA Independent Film Group is tasked with managing the global sales and distribution of the film.

A Reunion and a Fresh Start: Rodriguez and Baldoni Collaborate Again

This film marks a reunion for Justin Baldoni and Gina Rodriguez, who previously captivated audiences as romantic leads Jane Villanueva and Rafael Solano in the popular ABC series "Jane the Virgin." "House of Guerrero" is also Baldoni's first major project announcement since the resolution of a legal dispute with Blake Lively concerning their collaboration on Sony's 2024 film, "It Ends With Us."

The Director's Personal Connection to the Story

Rodriguez expressed her deep personal connection to the film, stating that directing it feels like the start of a chapter she has carried throughout her life. She shared her lifelong engagement with boxing and her determination to showcase how the sport can offer profound life lessons. Filming in California with a remarkable cast and crew has been an emotional and humbling experience for her. Rodriguez emphasized her strong sense of responsibility to tell this story with integrity, passion, and pride, particularly as it highlights Latino narratives, families, and heroes, which she believes deserve increased visibility and recognition. She conveyed her long-held dream of bringing this film to fruition and her eagerness to step into the ring to make it a reality.

Baldoni's Endorsement of Rodriguez's Vision

Justin Baldoni, in his own statement, lauded Rodriguez's talent, drawing from their five years of working together on "Jane the Virgin." He highlighted her extraordinary ability to craft stories that resonate deeply with human experiences. Baldoni noted Rodriguez's inherent connection to boxing and her fervent desire to feature Latino characters and experiences that are often overlooked in leading film roles. He reiterated Wayfarer Studios' mission to create impactful stories that foster connection and remind audiences of their shared humanity, expressing immense pride in supporting Rodriguez's vision for this deeply personal film.
