Trash Mountain: A Gay Man's Homecoming to a Conservative Town

Roger Ebert

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

In "Trash Mountain," Gavin (portrayed by Caleb Hearon) is a gay man thriving in Chicago, immersed in a supportive queer community. His comfortable life takes an abrupt turn when an urgent summons from his conservative Missouri hometown forces him to return following the passing of his estranged, hoarder father. This unexpected homecoming plunges Gavin into a poignant journey of grief, family reconciliation, and self-discovery. Working with his half-sister Abbi (Zooey Deschanel), they embark on the daunting task of clearing their father's cluttered house, a physical manifestation of his chaotic life. This shared endeavor, set against the backdrop of their childhood home and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, compels them to confront their traumatic past and the complicated legacy their father left behind.

As Gavin navigates his return, he grapples with the inherent tension of being openly gay in a less tolerant environment. A budding romance with Jaboukie Young-White's charming and optimistic professor, who has embraced their new conservative surroundings after moving from progressive Seattle, challenges Gavin's preconceived notions about happiness and belonging. This new connection, coupled with the rekindled bond with his sister, encourages Gavin to re-evaluate his relationship with his hometown and consider the possibility of finding fulfillment in the very place he once yearned to escape. A particularly memorable scene, where the grieving siblings perform a drunken karaoke duet, beautifully encapsulates their renewed connection and shared processing of loss, highlighting their undeniable chemistry despite their differences.

"Trash Mountain" marks a significant return for director Kris Rey, showcasing her distinct directorial voice with its warm and nuanced storytelling. The film benefits from stellar performances, particularly from Caleb Hearon, whose portrayal of Gavin is both witty and profoundly authentic. Zooey Deschanel delivers a standout performance, echoing the complex roles of her earlier career and reminding audiences of her unique blend of sarcasm and vulnerability. Rey's direction skillfully blends the naturalistic style of Mumblecore cinema with subtle social commentary, creating an emotionally rich narrative rather than relying on complex plot twists. The movie’s intimate exploration of navigating personal identity within a conservative community, juxtaposed with the universal themes of family and healing, makes it a compelling and deeply relatable cinematic experience.

The film offers a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of acceptance, both from others and within oneself. It beautifully illustrates that true happiness and belonging can often be found in unexpected places, challenging us to look beyond initial perceptions and embrace the complexities of our past and present. The story inspires viewers to confront their own emotional "trash mountains" and find peace and understanding in the journey of self-discovery and familial bonds.
