A Documentary on Nature's Resilience in the Face of Industry

Roger Ebert

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

Mi Steinbach's journey to creating her documentary, "Strange Neighbors," began serendipitously during a holiday in northern Germany. She encountered Gert Dahms, a devoted conservation officer for the remote island of Schwarztonnensand, an islet largely inaccessible to the public. Dahms' profound commitment to preserving this unique natural habitat immediately captivated Steinbach, shifting her focus from a general interest in the individual to the larger story of the island itself and the passion it ignited within its protector.

Schwarztonnensand, a mere two miles long, was formed in the 1960s from sand dredged during the deepening of the Elbe River. What was once an overlooked pile of sand has, over six decades, transformed into a remarkable nature reserve. This untouched sanctuary stands in stark contrast to its surroundings: massive container ships navigating one of Europe's busiest shipping channels, an Airbus factory, a major chemical plant, a decommissioned nuclear facility, and vast expanses of industrial farmland. This juxtaposition of pristine wilderness and intense industrial activity, despite the environmental threats like chemical runoff causing significant fish mortality, fascinated Steinbach and became the central theme of her film.

The creation of "Strange Neighbors" was a solitary endeavor, as Steinbach chose to film alone to minimize human impact on the island's shy wildlife. Over three years, she meticulously documented Schwarztonnensand through every season, often spending days waiting patiently to capture intimate moments with deer, foxes, and various bird species. Her film diverges from conventional nature documentaries by foregoing a voiceover, allowing the visuals and a unique synth-heavy score to convey the striking dichotomy between the serene natural world and the imposing industrial landscape. The film consistently intercuts between the island's untouched beauty and the bustling port, prompting viewers to contemplate the complex relationship between humanity's industrial might and the resilience of the natural world.

Ultimately, "Strange Neighbors" offers a compelling exploration of contradiction and harmony, inviting audiences to reflect on the delicate balance between human progress and environmental preservation. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in the most improbable locations, nature finds a way to flourish, and its quiet persistence can inspire a deep sense of wonder and a renewed appreciation for our planet's wild spaces.
