Peter Chan's "The Road Not Taken": A Director's Philosophy on Filmmaking and Alzheimer's

Stephen King

Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

During the creation of his film, "The Road Not Taken," slated for its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, acclaimed director Peter Chan Ho-sun drew significant inspiration from a state-of-the-art Alzheimer's care center in Chengdu. Here, he encountered a guiding philosophy, “shun shi er wei, shi ke er zhi”—to adapt to circumstances and recognize limits—a motto that profoundly influenced his artistic decisions. This principle, initially offered to families of dementia patients to encourage empathy and acceptance rather than correction, became Chan's personal directive for filmmaking.

Chan's involvement with the project evolved from producer to director, necessitating a comprehensive rewrite of the existing script. He consciously steered the narrative away from being a mere exposition on a disease, choosing instead to delve into the intricate breakdown and eventual healing of family dynamics under the shadow of Alzheimer's. The film introduces the illness not through a dramatic event, but through a seemingly minor lapse in memory, anchoring the narrative firmly within the patient's subjective experience. This artistic choice, exemplified by a scene where a dripping faucet transforms into a flooded garage in the protagonist's mind, highlights the disruptive nature of the disease from an internal viewpoint. A bold experimental ending, where unknown actors replaced the main cast to symbolize the patient's altered perception of her family, was ultimately reconsidered to ensure audience connection, showcasing the "know when to stop" aspect of his motto. Furthermore, Chan's decision to cast Zhou Xun, known for her gentler roles, as a complex character facing early-onset Alzheimer's, demonstrated his trust in his actors' ability to embody challenging portrayals naturally, without excessive directorial intervention. He also adapted the protagonist's profession from an online influencer to a television host, aligning it with his own experiences as a director and allowing for a more universal exploration of her worldview.

The production, completed with remarkable speed, underscores Chan's efficient methodology. His unique approach to casting, exemplified by convincing director Tian Zhuangzhuang to portray a father figure, illustrates his belief in authentic performance over conventional choices. The film's premiere strategy, opting for a Toronto debut before its release in China, reflects Chan's awareness of the potent influence of social media on a film's reception. The consistent emotional resonance observed in private screenings worldwide highlights the universal impact of Alzheimer's, positioning the film as a poignant reflection on a condition increasingly affecting global communities. Chan's journey with "The Road Not Taken" exemplifies a compassionate and insightful directorial vision, transforming a challenging subject into a deeply human narrative that seeks to foster understanding and connection.
