Oscar-nominated filmmaker Carlos López Estrada is set to inaugurate the Indie Institute, an intensive virtual program designed to accelerate the journey of independent filmmakers. This initiative, operating under Estrada's Antigravity Academy, seeks to democratize access to essential filmmaking resources and guidance for aspiring talents.

The Indie Institute, a subscription-based platform, offers a comprehensive three-month curriculum. It aims to nurture the creative process from initial script development through to the final release of a motion picture, providing invaluable support in a rapidly evolving industry landscape. Estrada expressed his profound belief in the potency of independent cinema, emphasizing the transformative power of providing storytellers with unrestricted creative backing. He views the Indie Institute as the paramount endeavor to extend this vision to a broader creative community.

Slated for its debut on March 22, the program will be available for a monthly fee of $35, with an alternative upfront payment option of $99. Participants will benefit from mentorship and instruction in various aspects of independent filmmaking. The curriculum is meticulously crafted to blend traditional film education with practical wisdom gleaned from seasoned filmmakers and industry specialists. This approach is designed to equip emerging filmmakers with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully navigate and break into the indie film sector.

Antigravity Academy, which founded Estrada's production company in 2018, is dedicated to championing and producing narratives from underrepresented voices, while also incubating projects for first and second-time directors. The Indie Institute builds upon this foundation, offering weekly sessions led by López Estrada himself and Antigravity's head of development, Holly Stanton. These sessions will be complemented by case studies featuring prominent independent filmmakers and industry experts, offering diverse perspectives and real-world examples. The launch of the Indie Institute coincides with the completion of Estrada's upcoming feature film, DED, starring Camila Mendez and Eugenio Derbez. Furthermore, Antigravity Academy is now in its third year of its acclaimed screenwriters camp and the second year of its short film studio, demonstrating a continuous commitment to fostering new talent.

In addition to these educational endeavors, Antigravity is actively involved in film production, with Alexandra Qin's feature Thirstygirl currently in pre-production. This follows the success of director Sean Wang’s film Didi, which garnered an audience award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival before its release by Focus Features. The academy's diverse portfolio also includes a comedy series titled Smugglers, a collaborative effort with This American Life and showrunner Joanna Calo. Notably, in 2024, Antigravity presented the multimedia film For Mexico For All Time at the Sphere in Las Vegas, as part of the Noche UFC sporting event, showcasing its expansive creative reach across various platforms.

The launch of the Indie Institute marks a significant step towards empowering the next generation of filmmakers, providing a structured yet flexible environment for creative growth and industry integration. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, the program is poised to cultivate a new cohort of storytellers, fostering diverse narratives and contributing to the vibrant landscape of independent cinema.
