The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX) has renewed its collaboration with European Film Promotion (EFP) for the second edition of their 'Europe! Docs' program. This joint venture is strategically designed to bring attention to outstanding European documentary films and enhance their presence in the North American market, fostering global connections within the film industry.
This year's 'Europe! Docs' online presentation features six European documentaries carefully selected from the CPH:DOX lineup. Each of these films is a world premiere and competes in the festival's prestigious DOX:AWARD section. The selection process emphasizes the diverse narratives and creative prowess characteristic of contemporary European documentary filmmaking, offering a rich tapestry of stories and perspectives.
Sonja Heinen, the managing director of EFP, expressed her enthusiasm for the continued partnership, highlighting the unique platform 'Europe! Docs' provides for connecting European filmmakers with key North American industry figures. She underscored the initiative's commitment to boosting European cinema's visibility and impact in the U.S. market through early exposure and new partnerships.
Mara Gourd-Mercado, head of industry and training at CPH:DOX, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the value 'Europe! Docs' adds to CPH:Market. She noted that the program provides crucial early exposure for European documentaries to U.S. buyers and decision-makers, facilitating meaningful dialogue around these cinematic works. Gourd-Mercado sees this as a vital step in strengthening international pathways for European non-fiction films and solidifying CPH:Industry's role as a central hub for the global documentary sector.
Among the highlighted films is Nathan Grossman's 'Amazomania' (Sweden, France, Denmark, 2026), which revisits footage from a 1996 expedition to document the isolated Korubo people, prompting a re-evaluation of that initial encounter and its subsequent ramifications. 'Arctic Link' (Switzerland, 2026), a hybrid documentary by Ian Purnell, delves into the conflicting hopes and fears surrounding a fiber-optic cable project connecting a remote Alaskan community. Karl Friis Forchhammer's 'Christiania' (Denmark, 2026) offers an insider's view of Copenhagen's 50-year-long experiment in communal living, exploring its blend of idealism, creativity, and inherent challenges. Nolwenn Hervé's 'The Cord' (France, 2026) is a poignant portrayal of a 'maternity warrior' in Venezuela's struggling healthcare system, striving to preserve the bond between pregnant women and their infants. Pieter-Jan De Pue's 'Mariinka' (Belgium, 2026), filmed on 16mm, is a long-term documentary capturing the lives of young Ukrainians shaped by a decade of conflict in Donbas. Finally, Rachel Close's 'Something Familiar' (Romania, U.K., 2026) follows her personal journey of discovery, intertwined with a fellow adoptee's search for her birth mother, leading to a confrontation with a family legacy of exploitation.
Beyond the film showcase, 'Europe! Docs' encompasses a comprehensive press and promotional campaign. This includes an online press event featuring leading industry media and tailored industry preparation for participating filmmakers, offering strategic guidance for the U.S. market and targeted introductions. The program also facilitates in-person networking opportunities at CPH:Forum, ensuring direct engagement between European filmmakers and North American decision-makers, further solidifying global connections and opportunities.
