Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Banijay Entertainment has made a significant stride in bolstering its comedy programming by securing the worldwide adaptation rights to the popular Japanese series "You Laugh You Lose." This collaboration with Yoshimoto Kogyo, the original creator of the acclaimed "LOL: Last One Laughing," marks an important expansion for Banijay. The acquisition will see the company spearhead localized versions of the show across 23 different territories, while Yoshimoto Kogyo will continue to oversee its distribution elsewhere. This strategic move not only diversifies Banijay's extensive portfolio but also underscores a growing international demand for engaging and innovative comedic formats.

Global Expansion for Japanese Comedy Hit

On February 24, 2026, Banijay Entertainment officially partnered with Yoshimoto Kogyo, a leading Japanese entertainment conglomerate, to acquire the global format rights for the long-running comedy challenge, "You Laugh You Lose." This show, a staple on Nippon TV since its debut in 2006, immerses a group of comedians in an elaborate 24-hour scenario within a real-world setting. The core rule dictates that participants must maintain a straight face, with any laughter resulting in an immediate comedic penalty. The series escalates in absurdity, featuring unannounced celebrity appearances and increasingly bizarre situations designed to test the comedians' resolve. Banijay's Chief Content Officer of Development, James Townley, expressed enthusiasm for the format's playful and unpredictable nature, highlighting its international appeal and adaptability. He noted that the show's 24-hour setup and instant gag penalties offer significant creative opportunities for local adaptations. Hiroshi Fujiwara, Director and Vice President of Yoshimoto Kogyo, expressed honor in collaborating with Banijay, emphasizing the series' status as one of Japan's most beloved variety shows and his anticipation for its global reception. Helen Greatorex, Banijay Entertainment's Head of Format Acquisitions, orchestrated the agreement. The acquisition will be prominently featured at the London Screenings 2026, alongside other new formats from Banijay and its third-party showcase, further solidifying Banijay's position as a major player in the global entertainment landscape.

The acquisition of "You Laugh You Lose" by Banijay Entertainment signifies a compelling trend in the global entertainment industry: the increasing appetite for successfully proven international formats. This move demonstrates that unique and engaging content, regardless of its origin, has the potential for universal appeal. It also highlights the strategic importance of international collaborations in bringing diverse creative works to a broader audience, fostering cultural exchange through the shared language of humor. For content creators, this reinforces the value of originality and the potential for their local hits to transcend borders and become global phenomena, inspiring new avenues for cross-cultural entertainment development.
