“Marshals” Series Premiere Garners Significant Viewership

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

The new television series, “Marshals,” a derivative of the popular “Yellowstone” saga, debuted on CBS to remarkable viewership. The premiere episode attracted an audience of 9.5 million, setting a new benchmark as the most-watched launch for a scripted broadcast show in over seven years, excluding programs that benefited from direct lead-ins from NFL games.

This impressive viewership places “Marshals” ahead of many previous premieres, with “FBI” holding the last comparable record in September 2018 with 10.1 million viewers. Furthermore, the episode, named “Piya Wiconi,” demonstrated exceptional audience engagement by maintaining 99% of its initial viewers through to the second half, highlighting its compelling narrative and strong appeal. The series also outranked other major network programming during its debut week, underscoring its significant impact on the broadcast landscape.

Luke Grimes reprises his role as Kayce Dutton, now a U.S. Marshal, blending his background as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to enforce justice in Montana. This unique blend of skills and settings contributes to the show’s appeal, establishing it as a noteworthy addition to the "Yellowstone" universe and a significant entry in broadcast television.

The successful launch of “Marshals” demonstrates the enduring appeal of well-crafted storytelling and strong character development. It underscores the power of compelling narratives to capture and retain audiences in an increasingly competitive media landscape, proving that quality content continues to be a driving force in entertainment.
