Ryan Gosling's Daughters Lend Voices to 'Project Hail Mary' Alien Character

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

In a unique behind-the-scenes revelation, acclaimed actor Ryan Gosling shared that his own daughters played an unconventional but crucial role in the production of his forthcoming science fiction epic, "Project Hail Mary." The young girls, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee, contributed their voices to the film's extraterrestrial character, Rocky, thereby influencing their father's performance and even the visual aesthetics of his on-screen persona.

During the filming of "Project Hail Mary," which features Gosling's character interacting with an alien companion named Rocky, the actor utilized an innovative method to bring authenticity to his performance. He explained that his daughters would provide the voice for Rocky through an earpiece he wore, allowing him to engage in natural, spontaneous conversations. This intimate collaboration with his children added an unexpected layer of depth to his portrayal of the character's reactions and emotions. Gosling noted that several of his genuine on-screen responses to Rocky were, in fact, direct reactions to his daughters' impromptu dialogue.

Beyond their vocal contributions, Gosling's daughters also subtly influenced the visual development of his character. He recounted an instance where one of his daughters commented on his appearance while he was trying on different looks for the role. Her observation about him looking 'smart in glasses' prompted him to incorporate spectacles into his character's final design, demonstrating the unexpected ways his family's input shaped the project. The film, adapted from Andy Weir's acclaimed novel, sees Gosling as a science teacher embarking on a space mission to safeguard Earth. "Project Hail Mary" boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub, and is helmed by the accomplished directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on hits such as "The LEGO Movie" and "21 Jump Street."

This heartwarming collaboration underscores the personal touch Gosling brought to "Project Hail Mary," creating a unique blend of family involvement and cinematic artistry. The film is scheduled for release on March 20, promising audiences an engaging sci-fi adventure enriched by these distinctive behind-the-scenes moments.
