Recent unsubstantiated claims regarding Jim Carrey's attendance at the prestigious César Awards, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award, have been firmly refuted by both his representative and an executive from the French film ceremony. Despite photographic evidence confirming his presence, online conspiracy theories emerged, suggesting that an impersonator had accepted the accolade in his stead. However, officials have clarified that the renowned actor genuinely participated in the event, delivering a poignant speech and celebrating with his loved ones.

Jim Carrey's Genuine Presence at the César Awards Confirmed Amidst Impersonation Rumors

In a formal declaration on Monday, Jim Carrey's spokesperson, Marleah Leslie, unequivocally stated to Entertainment Weekly that "Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award." This statement directly addresses and dismisses the swirling online rumors. The 64-year-old actor delivered a heartfelt speech on Thursday in Paris, accepting his lifetime achievement award. Despite this, a wave of conspiracy theories swept across social media over the weekend, claiming that it was not Carrey himself, but an impersonator, who was present at the ceremony.

Adding fuel to these conjectures, drag artist Alexis Stone posted on Instagram, hinting at his own involvement in impersonating Carrey. Stone shared images of the "Eternal Sunshine" star at the event, alongside a collection of prosthetics and makeup, implying he was the one who had taken Carrey's place. Stone has a history of impersonating various celebrities, including Lana Del Rey, Donatella Versace, and Adele.

Nevertheless, Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, has also come forward to debunk these widespread rumors. Caulier explained to Variety that "Jim Carrey's visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy's invitation." He further elaborated on the meticulous preparations, stating, "He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words." Caulier confirmed that Carrey was accompanied by his partner, daughter, grandson, and twelve of his closest friends and family members. He also noted the presence of Carrey's long-time publicist and his old friend, director Michel Gondry, with whom he has collaborated on films and television series.

In conclusion, Caulier dismissed the entire episode as a "non-issue," emphasizing Carrey's "generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance" during his visit. During his acceptance speech on Thursday, Carrey revealed his French ancestry, tracing his "great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré" to Saint Malo approximately 300 years ago, before his emigration to Canada. He also paid tribute to his father, Percy Joseph Carrey, whom he described as "the funniest man I have ever known," acknowledging his father's role in instilling in him "the value of love, generosity and laughter." Carrey's most recent screen appearance was in the 2024 film "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," where he portrayed both Gerald Robotnik and Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.

This incident highlights the pervasive nature of misinformation in the digital age, where even well-documented public appearances can become subjects of elaborate conspiracy theories. It also underscores the importance of official statements and credible sources in dispelling such rumors. Carrey's César Award acceptance, a moment of significant personal and professional recognition, was momentarily overshadowed by frivolous speculation, yet ultimately reaffirmed by verifiable facts and the testimonies of those present. The event served as a testament to his enduring legacy in cinema and his deep personal connection to his heritage.
