Yaz Haddad to Star in Australian Comedy-Horror 'Bloody Legend'
Guillermo del ToroOscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.
Yaz Haddad, a well-known Australian actor and radio personality, is set to take on the starring role in "Bloody Legend," an upcoming comedy-horror feature. This production, a collaboration between Thundercat Productions and Crybaby, has recently commenced filming in Western Sydney and the scenic Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Haddad, recognized for his work as co-host of Sydney's 2DayFM breakfast program "Yaz & Feras," will portray the character of Benny. Benny, a social media enthusiast from Western Sydney, embarks on a mission to capture footage of a fabled large wildcat, only to find himself entangled in increasingly perilous circumstances. This marks Haddad's inaugural lead role and his second appearance in a feature film, following a supporting part in the forthcoming "Streetfighter" movie.
The film's narrative is rooted in a fascinating piece of Australian lore, which recounts decades of sightings of a large, panther-like creature roaming the Blue Mountains. These reports include numerous alleged encounters each year, notably a sensational incident involving a local teenager in 2002. "Bloody Legend" aims to skillfully combine the comedic aspects of this legend with intense horror elements, as Benny's ambition for online fame inadvertently thrusts him and his companions into grave danger. The cast further includes Hamze Taha and Marcus Trgo, who are making their feature film debuts as Benny's friends, alongside veteran actor Tony Rahme, known for his work in "Shortland Street." The ensemble also features Natassia Halabi, comedians Fady Kassab and Cameron James, New Zealand actor Ben Fransham, Dom Littrich, Kathleen O'Dwyer, Will Ward, Benjamin Cremen, and popular comedian-influencers Sarah Michaels and Nariman Dein.
Behind the scenes, the film is penned by Susan Taylor, a Sydney publicist who has transitioned to fiction and screenwriting. Taylor also co-directs the project with Catherine Stone, co-founder of Crybaby Productions. Stone brings over two decades of directing experience in documentaries, music videos, and large-scale broadcasts, including the internationally viewed Sydney New Year's Eve online broadcast. "Bloody Legend" represents Crybaby's first feature film and Stone's return to long-form storytelling. The project originated from an idea by Pedro Cuccovilla Vitola, a former executive producer for "The Kyle & Jackie O Show." Taylor and Bianca Austin are producing under the Thundercat Productions banner, with Stone serving as a collaborating producer through Crybaby. The film is independently financed by its producers and is also securing funds through the Australian Cultural Fund. Rob Norman, a Sydney-based cinematographer, is the director of photography, with Riley MacKenzie as the first assistant director. Yaz Haddad expressed his enthusiasm for the script, describing it as a unique contribution to Australian cinema, noting its raw humor and tension, and its significant portrayal of second-generation Australians, a demographic often underrepresented in local films.
This film is a testament to the power of creative storytelling, blending cultural narratives with modern themes of ambition and the digital age. It highlights the importance of recognizing and celebrating diverse voices and stories within the cinematic landscape, pushing boundaries while remaining grounded in relatable human experiences. Such projects inspire both laughter and contemplation, demonstrating the rich tapestry of narratives waiting to be explored.
