Crimson Desert Developer Compares "Clunky" Controls to Riding a Bike

Pioneer of graphic adventure games, co-founder of Sierra On-Line, and creator of "King's Quest."

"Crimson Desert," an anticipated action RPG, has sparked considerable debate among players regarding its control scheme. Despite achieving significant commercial success, with over two million units sold within 24 hours of its launch, many users have voiced strong opinions, describing the controls as counterintuitive or "convoluted." Developers, however, suggest that like learning to ride a bicycle, proficiency will naturally come with continued engagement.

The control system of "Crimson Desert" has been a central point of contention for both game critics and the wider player community. Reviewers from prominent gaming publications have highlighted the controls as unusually complex, with some suggesting the use of a controller over a keyboard for a less frustrating experience, albeit with caveats about accidental actions within the game. User feedback on platforms like Reddit has been even more direct, with players expressing extreme dissatisfaction and calling for immediate changes.

In response to the growing wave of criticism, Will Powers, the PR and marketing director for Pearl Abyss, the studio behind "Crimson Desert," offered a unique perspective. He compared the game's challenging controls to the process of learning to ride a bike, stating that while it may take time to grasp initially, it eventually becomes second nature. This viewpoint was further supported by Dinga Bakaba, co-creative director at Arkane, who, without directly mentioning "Crimson Desert," shared his appreciation for games that introduce novel control schemes, viewing them as a "rewarding mental gymnastic" that encourages a deeper engagement with the game world.

Despite the commercial triumph and its high ranking on Steam's most-played charts, "Crimson Desert" currently holds a "mixed" user rating, largely attributable to the divisive control issues. Pearl Abyss has acknowledged the community's varied feedback, committing to actively address these concerns and implement swift improvements. It is widely anticipated that modifications to the control scheme will be a key component of these forthcoming updates, aiming to enhance the overall player experience.
