Oscar Winner Catherine Zeta-Jones to Headline 'Cupid' as a Controversial Therapist

In a compelling new role, Academy Award and Tony Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones will star in the psychological thriller 'Cupid'. She is cast as a marriage counselor whose unconventional approach to therapy pushes a troubled couple's relationship into perilous territory. The film, directed by Tate Taylor, known for his work on 'Ma', 'The Girl on the Train', and 'The Help', is based on a screenplay by the acclaimed Van Dyke brothers, who also penned 'Don't Worry Darling'.

The plot centers on a couple facing a marital crisis, who seek to reconcile their differences over a single weekend at the secluded home of Zeta-Jones's character. What initially begins as a hopeful endeavor for reconciliation quickly devolves as the counselor's methods become progressively harsher and more dangerous. The film's production is slated to commence in late summer-early fall of 2026, with principal photography taking place in the scenic location of Natchez, Mississippi. John Norris and Tate Taylor are set to produce the film alongside Ryan Donnell Smith. Director Taylor expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "This movie, ‘Cupid’? Let’s just say… you may never want to seek counseling again. Or perhaps you will, assuming you can handle it. I’m thrilled to take this journey with Catherine. There is no better artist to bring this unique thriller to life." International sales for 'Cupid' will be spearheaded by Upgrade at EFM, while CAA Media Finance, which facilitated the film's financial arrangements, will oversee its distribution rights in the United States. Jonathan Kier of Upgrade lauded the collaborative talent involved, remarking, "'Cupid' brings together stellar talent on both sides of the camera. This is a smart, contained genre film with real scale in the marketplace, with a global star and a director who has consistently delivered successful, audience-driven thrillers, and we’re excited to launch it at EFM."

The casting of Catherine Zeta-Jones in 'Cupid' is particularly intriguing. Her portrayal of an unorthodox marriage counselor who veers into dangerous and cruel therapeutic practices could offer a profound commentary on the vulnerabilities inherent in seeking professional help for deeply personal issues. The film appears poised to explore the ethical boundaries of therapy and the potential for manipulation within relationships of trust. It raises questions about how far one might go in the pursuit of love and reconciliation, and the fine line between healing and harm. This thriller could serve as a cautionary tale, prompting audiences to reflect on the nature of psychological intervention and the hidden complexities beneath the surface of seemingly benevolent intentions.
