Warner Bros. has officially inaugurated its cutting-edge Ranch Lot Studios, marking a substantial enhancement of its production infrastructure. This expansion aims to significantly increase the studio's capacity for film and television production, cementing its status as a major player in the entertainment industry. The new facility is set to become a central hub for various productions, supporting both established series and new projects.

The Grand Opening of Ranch Lot Studios

Warner Bros.' Ranch Lot Studios, a sprawling new production complex, has officially commenced operations, significantly bolstering the studio's physical production capabilities. Situated in Burbank, California, less than a mile from the iconic main lot, this state-of-the-art facility encompasses 16 soundstages, a dedicated construction workshop, modern office buildings, and comprehensive production support amenities, all spread across nearly one million square feet. The stages have received certification from the California Film Commission, enabling eligible productions to access valuable subsidies, thereby attracting a steady stream of film and television projects. Since its soft launch earlier this year, the Ranch has already secured filming commitments from four prominent shows, highlighting its immediate appeal and functionality. This expansion strategically positions Warner Bros. Discovery as one of the largest soundstage operators in the Los Angeles area, with a combined total of 50 stages across its various locations, including the 30 stages at the main lot and four at the Burbank Studios facility. Executives from the company recently provided an exclusive tour of the property, emphasizing the Ranch's pivotal role in supporting the studio's ambitious film and TV ventures. Simon Robinson, president of global experiences and studio operations, underscored the importance of this expansion, particularly in light of potential future acquisitions, stating that the facility provides essential real estate for ongoing production needs.

The strategic opening of the Ranch Lot Studios comes at a crucial time for the entertainment industry, as Los Angeles has experienced fluctuating soundstage occupancy rates. While overall occupancy dipped in early 2025, Warner Bros.' existing stages maintained an impressive 91 percent occupancy in 2025, demonstrating a consistent demand for their facilities. The new Ranch Lot is designed to address this high demand, allowing Warner Bros. to accommodate more productions, particularly its in-house content. Simon Robinson noted that the studio still relies on external stages for many of its productions, making the ability to host more content within its own facilities a significant advantage. This shift is not merely a corporate mandate but a practical decision driven by the increasing number of showrunners within the Warner Bros. Discovery family who are keen to utilize the company's own stages. The Ranch offers unparalleled amenities, including four blocks of four stages each, ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 square feet. These stages boast concrete floors, impressive 45-foot clearances for rigging, advanced heating systems, dimmer rooms, and high-capacity silent air conditioning. The cost per square foot at the Ranch is competitive with that of the main lot, making it an attractive option for productions requiring robust soundstage infrastructure without the need for an extensive backlot. Additionally, large basecamps can be conveniently set up directly outside the stages, streamlining logistical operations for film crews. The production support buildings, adjacent to each stage, are thoughtfully designed across three floors, providing private dressing rooms, hair and makeup facilities, and flexible office and costume suites. A five-story office building offers adaptable workspaces that can be configured to meet the evolving needs of various production teams. The campus also features a whimsical Looney Tunes-themed cafeteria, "Bug's Bistro," and outdoor event spaces, all designed with a distinct 1970s aesthetic, incorporating black marble, slat wood paneling, and warm burnt orange and gold accents, creating a vibrant and inspiring creative environment.

Enhancing In-House Production Capabilities

The strategic vision behind the Ranch Lot Studios is primarily to enhance Warner Bros. Discovery’s ability to host its own productions, addressing the increasing demand for high-quality soundstages. This initiative is geared towards consolidating filming activities within WBD's expansive network of facilities, a move that executives believe will significantly benefit the company. As Simon Robinson articulated, despite the extensive number of stages already operated by WBD, many of their projects are still filmed on external lots. The new Ranch Lot aims to reverse this trend by providing top-tier, in-house options for showrunners and production teams. This effort is not a directive from the top, but rather a logical and economically sound approach to maximizing existing assets and retaining production budgets within the company's ecosystem. The availability of these new stages is particularly timely given the record-high soundstage occupancy rates observed in Los Angeles, as highlighted by a recent FilmLA report. While the industry as a whole experienced some fluctuations in early 2025, Warner Bros. itself reported near-full occupancy for its stages in 2025, signaling a clear need for additional capacity. The Ranch Lot, with its advanced features and ample space, directly addresses this need, allowing the studio to accommodate more shows and prevent the necessity of turning away productions due to lack of space.

The increased capacity and state-of-the-art facilities at the Ranch Lot are expected to attract a wide array of Warner Bros. Discovery's productions, including those from its premium content divisions like HBO. Historically, many HBO shows have utilized external production facilities, but there is a growing internal push to film more of these high-profile projects on WBD's own stages. The reasoning is clear: keeping productions in-house not only streamlines operations but also optimizes resource allocation and financial benefits for the parent company. As one executive noted, "When WBD has open stages, it makes sense to have HBO here. We want to take care of our own shows first." This sentiment underscores a broader strategy to prioritize internal productions, fostering a more integrated and efficient production environment. The Ranch Lot's advanced infrastructure, including its robust soundstages, specialized construction workshop dubbed "The Mill"—a 40,000-square-foot space used by shows like "The Studio" for set construction—and comprehensive support buildings, makes it an ideal location for a diverse range of projects. In addition to "The Studio," shows such as "Euphoria," "Latitude," "The Comeback," and "I Love LA" are among those expected to utilize the new facilities. This consolidation strategy is designed to ensure that whenever a new project receives a greenlight, the first call for production space will be to WBD's own stage operators, thereby maximizing internal utilization and strengthening the company's overall production capabilities in a competitive industry landscape.
