The stage rendition of the acclaimed 'Paranormal Activity' film series has made a notable entry onto Broadway. Originating from Oren Peli's low-budget indie film, which remarkably grossed nearly $200 million, the franchise now captivates audiences in an intimate theatrical setting. This production successfully translates the cinematic terror into a live experience, providing an abundance of thrills, chills, and screams, thereby cementing the series' enduring appeal and establishing its place in live theater.

'Paranormal Activity' Haunts Broadway with Immersive Theatrical Experience

On August 25, 2026, the stage adaptation of the renowned horror film series 'Paranormal Activity' officially opened on Broadway at the August Wilson Theater, with a preview performance held on August 22. This theatrical production, developed by a consortium including Melting Pot, Simon Friend, Hanna Osmolska, and numerous co-producers, ventures into live horror with an ambitious vision. Directed by Felix Barrett, known for his work on immersive experiences, the show captivates the audience by creating an unsettling atmosphere within a two-story haunted house designed by Fly Davis, subtly illuminated by Anna Watson. Unlike the film's found-footage perspective, the stage play invites viewers to observe multiple rooms simultaneously, heightening the sense of pervasive dread.

Writer Levi Holloway, returning to the horror genre after his previous work 'Grey House,' introduces two new lead characters, Lou (portrayed by Cher Álvarez) and James (Travis A. Knight). Lou, still recovering from a past paranormal encounter, and her initially skeptical husband James move from Chicago to London in hopes of a fresh start. However, strange occurrences soon escalate, forcing James to confront his disbelief. Their journey leads them to seek help from Ethylene Cotgrave (Eva Kaminsky), a podcast spiritualist whose séance takes an unexpected turn. Adding to the familial tension is James's pious mother, Carolanne (Shannon Cochran), who offers intrusive advice via FaceTime, a clever nod to the original film's narrative style.

Despite occasional narrative complexities in Holloway's script, the production excels in delivering its core objective: generating fear. The playful and charming dynamic between Lou and James in the initial scenes provides a brief respite before the terror unfolds, showcasing Álvarez's and Knight's impressive range from lightheartedness to sheer panic. The true marvel of the show lies in the illusions crafted by Chris Fisher, whose subtle yet impactful effects, combined with Luke Hall’s video design, create a chilling landscape. While Gareth Fry’s sound design, though powerful, sometimes overpowers the suspense, the overall theatrical experience is meticulously orchestrated to immerse the audience in a night of exhilarating horror.

The successful transition of 'Paranormal Activity' to the stage demonstrates the potential for horror to thrive beyond the screen, offering a unique and deeply personal encounter with fear. This production challenges conventional theatrical boundaries, proving that live performance can deliver a unique brand of terror that is both intimate and universally unsettling. It prompts reflection on how fear, when experienced collectively in a live setting, can create a powerful and memorable shared experience, transcending the passive consumption of film and inviting active participation in the unfolding dread. The seamless blend of classic horror tropes with innovative stagecraft highlights the enduring human fascination with the unknown and the effectiveness of live storytelling in exploring our deepest anxieties.
