PBS SoCal's Dominance and KMEX's Strong Showing at the Emmy Gala
At the recent L.A. Area Emmy Awards ceremony, PBS SoCal (KOCE and KCET) distinguished itself by winning eight awards. Their victories spanned diverse categories such as live event programming, entertainment, coverage of crime and social issues, and arts. Close behind was Univision's KMEX, which secured an impressive seven awards, while Telemundo's KVEA earned six accolades, demonstrating a strong performance by Spanish-language broadcasters.
KVEA and KABC Take Home Top Newscast Honors
KVEA maintained its leading position in the newscast categories, once again claiming Emmys for daily daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and daily evening (7 p.m. to midnight) broadcasts. Although KVEA had previously won all three daily newscast Emmys, KABC/ABC7 broke their streak this year by securing the award for daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), signifying a shift in the morning news landscape.

A highlight of the ceremony was KABC's David Ono being presented with the 2026 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award. This special recognition honored his more than three decades of dedicated broadcasting and his profound commitment to in-depth storytelling. His KABC co-anchor, Jovana Lara, had the privilege of presenting him with this prestigious award, acknowledging his significant impact on local news.
Behind the Scenes: The Production and Categories of the Awards
The 2026 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards event, held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, was expertly produced by Bob Bain and Bob Bain Productions, with KABC entertainment reporter George Pennacchio serving as host. Greg Taylor and Brian DeCloux were the Los Angeles Area Governors overseeing the awards. Categories recognized included Live and Breaking News Coverage, Crime and Social Issues, Culture and History, the Arts, Health and Science, Human Interest, Music, Sports, and the Environment, showcasing the broad spectrum of local programming.
Diverse Winners Across Los Angeles Television Landscape
Beyond the top three, other stations also celebrated wins. KABC/ABC7 and KNBC/NBC4 each earned four awards. Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet both received two awards. LA36, Spectrum SportsNet LA, and USC Football each took home one award, reflecting the varied talents and contributions across the Los Angeles television market.

In terms of nominations, PBS SoCal led with 29 nods, followed by KABC/ABC7 with 21, Univision's KMEX with 20, Telemundo's KVEA with 18, KNBC/NBC4 with 15, and Spectrum News 1 with 10. The eligibility period for this year's awards covered the 2025 calendar year, leading many news categories to spotlight comprehensive coverage of the devastating wildfires that affected the region last January, underscoring the vital role of local news in informing and serving the community during critical times.
