Nintendo UK has issued a definitive statement regarding the compatibility of its Labo VR peripheral with the upcoming Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch Online. Contrary to earlier reports, the company has clarified that the Labo VR goggles will not be officially supported for these classic 3D titles. Instead, Nintendo is introducing two dedicated accessories: a full Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch and a more affordable cardboard model, both designed to deliver the intended 3D visual experience for the Virtual Boy game collection.

Official Statement Confirms Labo VR Will Not Support Virtual Boy Classics

On February 5, 2026, Nintendo UK released a formal announcement addressing public inquiries about the compatibility of its 2019 Labo VR kit with the highly anticipated Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch Online. The company unequivocally stated, "Recently, we incorrectly stated that the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics game library will be compatible with the Nintendo Labo VR Goggles. However, the Nintendo Labo VR Goggles are not officially supported for the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library." This clarification rectifies previous reports, including one from GamesBeat, which had suggested that a Nintendo Treehouse staff member confirmed compatibility. Instead, players seeking to immerse themselves in Virtual Boy's 3D worlds will need to acquire one of the two newly offered peripherals: the standard Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch or the budget-friendly Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model) for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch. Both accessories are slated to launch on February 17, 2026, coinciding with the release of the Virtual Boy game library. The full replica is priced at $66.99 / $99.99, while the cardboard version offers a more accessible option at £16.99 / $24.99. Nintendo apologized for any confusion caused by the initial misinformation.

This announcement highlights Nintendo's strategic approach to its retro gaming offerings, ensuring a specific hardware experience for its classic Virtual Boy titles. While some existing Labo VR owners might be disappointed by the lack of compatibility, the introduction of dedicated Virtual Boy accessories demonstrates Nintendo's commitment to delivering an authentic and optimized 3D gaming experience. This move could also stimulate sales of the new accessories, reinforcing the company's ecosystem of specialized peripherals for its diverse gaming catalog.
