The Mummy 4: Fraser and Weisz's Return Hinges on a 'Beautiful, Scary, and Sweeping' Script

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have provided exciting insights into the forthcoming 'The Mummy 4,' confirming that the return of beloved stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is entirely dependent on their enthusiasm for the screenplay. The creative duo characterized the script as 'truly beautiful, terrifying, and expansive,' suggesting a grand vision for the next installment in the iconic franchise. This news comes amidst considerable anticipation from fans eager to see the original leads reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell, a reunion that promises to revitalize the series with its original dynamic. The film is currently projected for a global cinematic debut in May 2028.

During a promotional tour for their latest project, 'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,' Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett shared details with Entertainment Weekly about how they became involved with 'The Mummy 4.' They recounted a conversation with their long-standing producer, William Sherrick, who expressed his ambition to secure them for the next 'Mummy' film while they were engrossed in shooting their vampire feature, 'Abigail.' The directors initially found the idea audacious, admitting they thought it was an improbable feat for Sherrick to achieve. Their professional experience had taught them to maintain a cautious optimism about such opportunities, understanding that many exciting prospects often don't materialize, thus protecting them from potential disappointment.

As production on 'Abigail' concluded, the pair found themselves deeply engaged with writer Dave Coggeshall in crafting a compelling narrative for 'The Mummy 4.' Bettinelli-Olpin emphasized that Coggeshall's script is rich with both emotional depth and strong character development, essential elements for the franchise's enduring appeal. Gillett further highlighted the significance of the script's quality, stating his belief that Fraser and Weisz would only commit to the project if they genuinely resonated with the material. He indicated that the actors had indeed responded positively to what they had read, praising the script's overall strength and the exciting prospect it presented for production.

The return of Fraser and Weisz is particularly noteworthy given the history of the series. Both actors starred in the 1999 original 'The Mummy' and its 2001 sequel, 'The Mummy Returns.' However, Weisz did not appear in the third film, 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' (2008), where her role was recast with Maria Bello. Gillett's confirmation that Rachel Weisz is indeed part of the new film suggests a deliberate narrative choice, potentially indicating that the events of 'Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' may no longer be considered canonical to this new direction, thereby offering a fresh start for the characters and storyline.

Brendan Fraser himself has openly discussed his long-standing desire to revisit the role. In an interview with the Associated Press last year, he revealed that he had been waiting for two decades for the opportunity to contribute to another 'Mummy' film. Fraser reflected on the third installment, acknowledging it as a competent standalone movie, despite its production being influenced by external factors like NBC's Olympics broadcast rights, which led to filming in China. While proud of that film, he conveyed a clear longing to create the version of 'The Mummy 4' that he envisioned, stating, 'Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.'

The eagerly anticipated 'The Mummy 4' is poised to reignite the beloved adventure series with its original stars, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Their participation, contingent on a script described as 'beautiful, scary, and sweeping' by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, promises a faithful yet fresh continuation. With a theatrical release scheduled for May 2028, the film aims to deliver the narrative depth and excitement that fans have long awaited, potentially resetting the franchise's continuity to honor its most cherished characters.
