Maya Rudolph Set for Broadway Debut in 'Oh, Mary!'

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

Maya Rudolph, the celebrated actress known for her versatile comedic talents, is poised to make her highly anticipated Broadway debut in the acclaimed play 'Oh, Mary!'. She will take on the pivotal role of Mary Todd Lincoln, succeeding the play's creator, Cole Escola, in a limited engagement. This marks a significant milestone in Rudolph's illustrious career, bringing her unique brand of humor and performance to the hallowed stages of New York's theater district. The production, a hit with audiences and critics alike, has also announced an extension of its run, signaling its continued success and popularity.

Rudolph's role as Mary Todd Lincoln is set to begin on April 28 and will continue for an eight-week period, concluding on June 20. The character, as conceptualized by Cole Escola, portrays a reimagined version of Mary Todd Lincoln as an aspiring cabaret singer with a penchant for alcohol. Escola's original portrayal earned him a Tony Award, with Sam Pinkleton also receiving a Tony for his exceptional direction. Rudolph follows a line of distinguished performers who have previously embodied the character, including John Cameron Mitchell, Jinkx Monsoon, Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, and Hannah Solow.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new venture, Rudolph shared her excitement about joining the cast of 'Oh, Mary!'. She described the play as the funniest she has ever witnessed, calling it an honor to inhabit a role previously brought to life by such talented individuals. For Rudolph, making her Broadway debut in such a compelling and multifaceted role, portraying a "miserable, suffocated, alcoholic woman," is a lifelong aspiration realized. This theatrical engagement adds another dimension to her diverse career, which currently includes starring in the Apple TV+ series 'Loot' and lending her voice to Connie the Hormone Mistress in the animated show 'Big Mouth'.

The Broadway production of 'Oh, Mary!' has enjoyed considerable success, leading to an extension of its run through January 3, 2027. The play initially premiered on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024. In addition to its New York presence, 'Oh, Mary!' also has an ongoing production in London's West End and is slated for a North American tour, which is scheduled to commence in Hartford, Connecticut, in September 2026. This widespread reach demonstrates the play's universal appeal and its ability to captivate audiences across different theatrical landscapes.

Maya Rudolph's foray into Broadway with 'Oh, Mary!' is poised to be a highlight of the theatrical season. Her comedic prowess and stage presence are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the role of Mary Todd Lincoln, further cementing the play's reputation as a theatrical gem. With an extended run and a celebrated actress joining its ranks, 'Oh, Mary!' continues to be a must-see production, offering audiences a unique blend of humor, history, and compelling performances.
