Joe Bird Joins Catherine Laga'aia in Australian Gen Z Thriller 'Crashout'

Joe Bird, a rising talent recently acclaimed for his performance in the queer horror film 'Leviticus,' is set to embark on a new cinematic journey. His latest venture sees him joining Catherine Laga'aia in the Australian Gen Z satirical thriller, 'Crashout,' a production from Deadhouse Films. Bird's career has been on an upward trajectory, with 'Leviticus' premiering to critical acclaim at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and subsequently acquired by Neon in a significant deal. His previous work includes the successful A24 horror feature 'Talk to Me,' which grossed over $90 million globally, and a role in Warwick Thornton's Western 'Wolfram,' which competed at the Berlin Film Festival.
The ensemble cast for 'Crashout' also features Evelyn Sims in what is anticipated to be a breakthrough performance. Catherine Laga'aia, whose casting as the film's lead was previously reported, is also poised to star in Disney's forthcoming live-action adaptation of 'Moana.' This new thriller is penned and helmed by Nick Annas, with Helen Tuck and Enzo Tedeschi of Deadhouse Films producing. Deadhouse Films recently garnered two AACTA nominations, highlighting their growing influence in the industry. The executive production team includes Deanne Weir of WeirAnderson Films, alongside Bobby Romia and Tianna Roberts from the recently established Atypical Originals. Casting responsibilities are being managed by Stephanie Pringle and Alison Fowler at Chicken and Chips Casting.
International sales rights for 'Crashout,' excluding Australia and New Zealand, are being handled by Blue Finch Films. The UK-based sales company boasts a diverse portfolio, including 'Bowels of Hell' from the Oscar-winning RT Features, the SXSW-selected 'Imposters,' and the horror film 'Dolly,' which recently had a theatrical release through IFC. This project signals a promising collaboration of talent and production expertise, set to bring a distinctive Australian narrative to a global audience.
