Kristen Wiig Reveals "Bridesmaids" Food Poisoning Scene Was an On-Set Addition

The highly acclaimed 2011 comedy film “Bridesmaids” is celebrated for its unforgettable humor, particularly a scene depicting a catastrophic food poisoning incident. Recently, Kristen Wiig, one of the film’s co-writers and stars, revealed a fascinating detail about this iconic moment: it wasn't initially included in the movie's script. This spontaneous addition highlights the collaborative and improvisational nature of the filmmaking process, leading to one of the most talked-about sequences in modern comedy history.

Details on the Unscripted "Bridesmaids" Scene

During a recent discussion with Vanity Fair, Kristen Wiig, alongside her former co-star Rose Byrne, reflected on their experiences filming the Oscar-nominated comedy directed by Paul Feig. Wiig disclosed that the infamous food poisoning scene, where the bridal party suffers a sudden and severe illness while trying on wedding dresses, was developed later in the writing phase. She explained that the team embraced the idea, creating their unique rendition of a gross-out comedy moment. The goal was to portray the characters' attempts to conceal their discomfort without showing actual vomit, allowing the actresses to bring their comedic genius to the forefront. This approach led to chaotic and hilarious outcomes, including the destruction of a bridal boutique. Director Paul Feig further elaborated in a 2017 interview with Esquire that an even more outrageous version of the scene was filmed but ultimately cut due to its extreme nature. This deleted sequence involved a character, Becca, projectile vomiting across an office, ruining a wedding photo, which was deemed "a bridge too far." The final cast of “Bridesmaids” featured a stellar ensemble including Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey, whose collective performances cemented the film's status as a comedy classic.

This revelation offers insight into the dynamic and often evolving creative process behind successful films. It underscores the importance of flexibility and collaboration on set, demonstrating how some of a movie's most memorable moments can emerge from improvisation and a willingness to push creative boundaries. The "Bridesmaids" food poisoning scene, despite its gross-out humor, ultimately served to deepen the film's comedic impact and left a lasting impression on audiences, proving that sometimes the best ideas are born spontaneously.
