Jessie Buckley's Oscar Acceptance Speech: A Gaelic Tribute to Motherhood

Ricky Gervais

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

Jessie Buckley achieved a historic milestone at the 98th Academy Awards, becoming the first Irish woman to claim the Best Actress Oscar. Her acceptance speech, delivered for her compelling performance in "Hamnet," was a profound tribute to mothers, resonating deeply with the audience. She concluded her emotional address with a heartfelt message in Gaelic, adding a unique cultural touch to her momentous win and celebrating her Irish heritage.

Buckley's win was a highlight of the evening, recognizing her portrayal of William Shakespeare's wife in "Hamnet." The film delves into the couple's contrasting responses to grief following the tragic loss of their son. This adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, brought to the screen by O’Farrell herself and director Chloé Zhao, captivated critics and audiences alike. Buckley’s powerful performance had consistently garnered accolades throughout the awards season, including triumphs at the Actor Awards and the Golden Globes, making her Oscar victory widely anticipated.

Accepting her award at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Buckley's speech transcended mere gratitude. She extended her appreciation to her husband and their eight-month-old daughter, dedicating her win to the profound "chaos of a mother’s heart." The timing of her win, falling on Mother's Day in the U.K., added another layer of significance. Backstage, Buckley reflected on this serendipitous alignment, stating, "First Irish woman to win and on Mother’s Day — it feels like some kind of crazy alchemy that all of these things are colliding on a day like today." She shared a personal anecdote, mentioning her daughter's first tooth, symbolizing new beginnings and the joys of motherhood.

Before leaving the stage, Buckley shared a poignant Gaelic phrase: "Go raibh maith agaibh, slán." This translates to "Thank you very much, goodbye," a beautiful nod to her roots that left a lasting impression. She emphasized the personal growth she experienced through her role and her own journey into motherhood, stating, "I feel like what a gift to get to explore motherhood through this incredible mother this is and was, and then to become one myself, and then to receive this recognition of the incredible role mothers play in our world on this day is something I will never, ever forget." Her speech underscored the universal power and resilience of maternal love.

While Buckley's win marked the sole major award for the international contingent at the 98th Academy Awards, with other international films like Joachim Trier's "Sentimental Value" securing only one Oscar, the evening was largely dominated by films such as Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" and Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners." Nevertheless, Jessie Buckley's historic achievement and her culturally rich acceptance speech stood out as a memorable moment, celebrating both individual excellence and the enduring spirit of motherhood.
