Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell to Star in 'Single White Female' Remake

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

A new take on a classic 1990s psychological thriller is underway, with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell at the forefront.

3000 Pictures, a Sony Pictures division, has enlisted Sarah DeLappe, the acclaimed writer behind 'Bodies Bodies Bodies', to pen the screenplay for the 'Single Female' adaptation. This marks a modern reimagining of the 1992 cinematic hit 'Single White Female', which was based on John Lutz’s novel 'SWF Seeks Same' and originally featured Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Ortega and Russell are not only starring but also taking on producing roles, alongside Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva. Their involvement in the film was initially revealed last year, generating considerable anticipation.

The original 'Single White Female' captivated audiences with its story of Allison, portrayed by Fonda, who unknowingly invites danger into her home by renting a room to Hedra, played by Leigh, whose increasingly bizarre actions lead to chilling suspicions. The film achieved significant box office success, grossing $84.1 million globally, equivalent to approximately $195.8 million today.

Both stars are currently engaged in other high-profile projects. Ortega is immersed in the production of the third season of Netflix's 'Wednesday' and is slated for roles in Taika Waititi’s Sony film 'Klara and the Sun', as well as J.J. Abrams’ 'The Great Beyond' from Warner Bros., expected later this year. Russell is preparing for her role in Na Hong-jin’s 'Hope' and recently debuted on stage in 'The Effect'. She is also widely recognized for her breakthrough performance alongside Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s 'Bones and All'.

The announcement of this remake highlights Hollywood's ongoing trend of revisiting beloved stories for contemporary audiences, offering fresh perspectives while honoring original narratives. This project not only promises to bring a captivating thriller to a new generation but also provides a platform for talented artists to explore themes of identity, obsession, and the complexities of human relationships through a modern lens, encouraging a deeper understanding of these timeless concepts.
