CBS has announced the swift renewal of its new drama series, “Marshals,” for a second season, just under two weeks after its record-setting premiere. The show, set within the popular “Yellowstone” universe, debuted to an impressive 20.6 million multiplatform viewers in its first seven days, establishing itself as a significant hit and the most-streamed CBS program ever on Paramount+. This rapid decision underscores the show's overwhelming success and its strong appeal to audiences across various platforms.

"Marshals" Garners Phenomenal Viewer Engagement, Securing Early Second Season Pick-Up

In a significant move for television programming, CBS officially confirmed the renewal of its freshman series, “Marshals,” for a sophomore season on March 12, 2026. This announcement comes a mere 12 days after the show’s premiere on March 1, 2026. The new drama, an expansion of Taylor Sheridan's acclaimed “Yellowstone” saga, delivered an exceptional performance in its inaugural week, attracting an astonishing 20.6 million multiplatform viewers, encompassing viewership from both CBS broadcast and Paramount+ streaming services. According to data compiled from Nielsen Panel + Big Data and Live+7 ratings, this viewership figure positions “Marshals” as the most-watched broadcast original series premiere in nearly a decade, specifically since CBS’s launch of “Young Sheldon” in 2017, which also achieved success without the customary boost from an NFL lead-in. Furthermore, the premiere episode shattered internal records, becoming the most-streamed episode of any CBS program ever released on Paramount+. During the week of its debut, “Marshals” dominated television ratings, claiming the top spot among all shows and closely followed by another CBS midseason premiere, “Tracker,” which secured the second position. Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, expressed profound satisfaction with the series’ performance, stating that “Marshals” demonstrated a “breakout performance,” effectively captivating a vast audience across all available platforms and swiftly cementing its status as one of television’s most potent new offerings. Reisenbach attributed this widespread viewer enthusiasm to the enduring strength of the “Yellowstone” world, the compelling character-driven narratives crafted by the creative team, and the powerful ensemble cast led by Luke Grimes. The series, a collaborative production between Paramount TV Studios and 101 Studios, stars Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton, who transitions into an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. His character leverages his distinct skills as both a cowboy and a former Navy SEAL to deliver justice across the rugged landscapes of Montana. The cast also features notable talents such as Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham. Executive production duties are handled by a team including Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Spencer Hudnut, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Freidman, Luke Grimes, and Greg Yaitanes.

The rapid renewal of "Marshals" serves as a powerful testament to the current television landscape, where content originating from established universes, particularly those with a dedicated fanbase like "Yellowstone," holds significant potential for immediate success. This phenomenon highlights the evolving nature of viewership, where integrated storytelling across platforms, combined with strong character development and compelling narratives, can quickly capture a mass audience. It underscores the importance for networks and studios to strategically expand popular franchises, leveraging existing fan loyalty while simultaneously innovating to attract new viewers across both traditional broadcast and burgeoning streaming services.
