Google and Range Media Partners Ignite Optimistic Sci-Fi Film Competition with XPrize Collaboration
On March 9, 2026, a groundbreaking partnership was announced between Google, Range Media Partners, and XPrize, an organization celebrated for fostering technological innovation through grand challenges. The collaboration introduces a global science fiction filmmaking competition, supported by a remarkable $3.5 million in prize money. This initiative, under the banner of Google and Range’s '100 Zeros' program, is specifically tailored to promote the creation of optimistic science fiction narratives.
Peter Diamandis, the visionary founder and executive chairman of XPrize, articulated the competition's ethos, stating, "While cautionary tales have always played a vital role on screen, this competition creates space for a different, equally essential kind of storytelling – one that explores the complex optimism of a world in transition." Echoing this sentiment, Anousheh Ansari, CEO of XPrize, emphasized their core belief: "At XPrize, we believe optimism is a catalyst for innovation. By bringing the best minds together, removing barriers for innovation, and fueling creativity, we have the power to spark the next great idea that could change the future."
The competition structure is designed to attract top talent, offering a grand prize of $2.5 million in production funding alongside a $100,000 cash prize. The ultimate winner will also receive invaluable production support from Range Media Partners and cutting-edge creative technology resources from Google to transform their concept into a feature film. Additionally, four other finalists will each be awarded $100,000 in cash, with further cash prizes totaling $500,000 slated for future announcement.
Filmmakers are invited to submit a compelling three-minute film trailer or a short film that vividly portrays a positive future. Five chosen finalists will have the distinguished opportunity to present their visions live in September at the Moonshot Gathering in Los Angeles. Here, their innovative concepts will be evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges comprising leaders from the entertainment, technology, and scientific sectors.
This initiative represents a pivotal moment for the sci-fi genre, shifting focus from dystopian warnings to inspiring possibilities. It underscores the profound impact that creative storytelling can have on shaping societal perspectives and encouraging technological progress. By nurturing optimistic narratives, the competition aims to not only entertain but also to motivate audiences and innovators to collectively build a better tomorrow.
