The agreement was negotiated by Chance Huskey, GKIDS' VP of distribution, and Eva Diederix of Goodfellas, the latter managing international sales beyond Asia. This film marks Kore-eda's first live-action adaptation of a manga, drawing from Tatsuki Fujimoto's critically acclaimed work.

"Look Back" delves into the poignant story of two young female students, one grappling with severe social anxiety, who find common ground and connection through their shared ambition of becoming accomplished manga artists. Fujimoto's original web manga, initially published on Shonen Jump+ in 2021, quickly garnered immense popularity, achieving over 4 million views within its first two days. Its print version has since sold more than 900,000 copies domestically in Japan and over 750,000 internationally, earning a nomination at the 2023 Eisner Awards.
