Global Constellation has officially taken on the international distribution for the gripping five-episode limited series, "Heaven's Gate," marking its introduction to the global market at the prestigious Series Mania event. This significant Dutch-Malaysian collaboration promises a profound exploration of historical narratives, set against the evocative backdrop of an Indonesian plantation.

Global Constellation Unveils "Heaven's Gate" at Series Mania

In a recent announcement on March 25, 2026, international sales and financing firm Global Constellation confirmed its acquisition of the worldwide distribution rights for "Heaven's Gate," a captivating five-part miniseries. The series is currently being showcased to international buyers for the very first time at Series Mania, generating considerable industry buzz.

The narrative of "Heaven's Gate" intricately weaves together two distinct timelines: 1942 and the mid-1990s. The story centers on Saskia, who journeys to Indonesia with her teenage daughter, Alex, after inheriting a long-abandoned plantation named Heaven’s Gate. What initially appears as a pragmatic decision soon transforms into a disquieting exploration of her family's concealed colonial past. Saskia finds herself reliving the experiences of Anisa, a Javanese woman from 1942, who was entangled in a complex romantic triangle involving the plantation owner, Jan Stokman, and his wife, Marie.

As Saskia becomes increasingly immersed in these vivid visions, her daughter Alex grows concerned for her mother's mental well-being, striving to keep her connected to reality. Driven by a compelling desire to unearth the plantation’s deep-seated secrets, Saskia risks losing herself entirely within its haunting historical grasp.

This groundbreaking production represents the first official television co-production between the Netherlands and Malaysia. The series is under the joint direction of acclaimed filmmakers Jim Taihuttu, known for his work on "The East" and "Hardcore Never Dies," and Lisette Donkersloot, recognized for "Sihame." The compelling screenplay was crafted by Jim Taihuttu in collaboration with Randy Oost ("Mocro Maffia"), Amira Duynhouwer ("Nemesis"), and Victor D. Ponten ("Mocro Maffia").

The ensemble cast features a remarkable lineup of talent, including Denise Aznam ("The East"), Anneke Sluiters ("Heresy"), Gijs Naber ("The Night Manager"), Bront Palarae ("Satan’s Slaves"), and Abimana Aryasatya ("The Night Comes for Us").

Currently, production for "Heaven's Gate" is actively underway in Malaysia, with the completed series anticipated for delivery in early 2027. The project is a creation of New Amsterdam Film Company, co-produced by Kinovisuals, and was commissioned by the Dutch Public Broadcasters NPO and NTR. Financial backing for the production has been provided by the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, the National Public Broadcasting Fund (NPO Fund), and the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI), which is managed by Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional Malaysia (FINAS).

Ulrike Schröder, managing director of TV at Global Constellation, emphasized the series' distinctive international appeal, highlighting its weave of historical and colonial narratives that are expected to resonate widely. Sander Verdonk, producer and founder of New Amsterdam Film Company, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in the universal appeal of "Heaven's Gate" and its potential to captivate broad audiences with its high-quality, auteur-driven content.

The acquisition of "Heaven's Gate" further enriches Global Constellation's expanding and diverse portfolio of television and film projects, which includes the fantasy drama "All Heroes Are Bastards," the International Emmy Award-winning docuseries "On Fritzi’s Trace – What Was It Like in the GDR?," and Sophie Heldman’s "The Education of Jane Cumming."

This collaboration exemplifies the power of international co-productions in bringing unique and compelling stories to a global audience. The dual-timeline structure and the exploration of colonial history offer a rich tapestry for storytelling, promising viewers a thought-provoking and immersive experience. The emphasis on uncovering buried family secrets within a haunting setting suggests a narrative that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats, while also prompting reflection on historical impacts. "Heaven's Gate" is poised to be a significant contribution to the landscape of international drama series, fostering cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of shared histories.
