Netflix Greenlights 'City Hunter 2' for 2027 Release, Retaining Key Cast

In a much-anticipated announcement, Netflix has confirmed the production of "City Hunter 2," the direct follow-up to its successful 2024 live-action film. The sequel is slated for a worldwide release in 2027. Suzuki Ryohei, celebrated for his portrayal of the charismatic and skilled operative Ryo Saeba, will return to his leading role. Joining him is Morita Misato, reprising her character as Kaori Makimura, Ryo's indispensable partner. A notable addition to the ensemble is Kimura Fumino, who steps into the role of the astute and sharp-tongued detective, Saeko Nogami.

Shiraki Keiichiro, the director of the original, will once again helm the project, working from a screenplay penned by Yamaoka Junpei. The production is a collaborative effort between HoriPro Inc. and Film-makers Inc. for Netflix, with Misato Kono, Miyoshi Kikuchi, Tomoo Tsuchii, and Shinya Miyazaki serving as producers. This new installment continues to draw inspiration from Hojo Tsukasa's beloved manga, a series that has sold over 50 million copies globally since its initial publication.

The predecessor to "City Hunter 2" was a resounding triumph for Netflix, soaring to the No. 1 spot on its Global Top 10 (Non-English Films) during its opening week from April 22–28, 2024. It further cemented its popularity by landing in the Top 10 across 32 countries, including major markets like Japan, France, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Brazil. This widespread acclaim led to a remarkable ninefold increase in sales for Hojo's original manga, encompassing both physical and digital formats. Additionally, the film's on-location shooting, particularly at industrial heritage sites in Kobe, significantly contributed to the local economy, generating approximately JPY 129 million ($811,000) in economic activity.

Suzuki Ryohei expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to revisit the role, acknowledging the fans' support that made the sequel possible. He hopes the new film will resonate with both long-time aficionados and newcomers, allowing them to fully appreciate the essence of the original narrative. Hojo Tsukasa, the manga's creator, praised Suzuki's profound dedication and the director's passion, particularly highlighting Suzuki's impressive physical transformation for the role. Director Shiraki Keiichiro conveyed a mix of excitement and the profound responsibility of adapting such a legendary work for the modern Reiwa era, aiming to preserve its unique charm. Takahashi Shinichi, Netflix Japan’s director of live-action creative, emphasized the sequel's significance for Japanese content on the platform, promising a film that is "cooler than ever, goofier than ever, and more emotional than ever." Filming for "City Hunter 2" is currently underway.

The return of "City Hunter" to Netflix's global stage highlights the enduring appeal of Japanese manga and anime. This sequel not only caters to a devoted fanbase but also introduces a new generation to a classic narrative, demonstrating how timeless stories can be successfully reimagined for contemporary audiences. The success of the first film, both critically and economically, underscores the potential for cross-cultural adaptations to generate significant revenue and cultural impact. As streaming platforms continue to expand their international content, "City Hunter 2" stands as a testament to the power of global storytelling and the universal resonance of compelling characters and intricate plots. The commitment shown by the cast and crew, as lauded by the original creator, suggests that this installment will be a faithful yet fresh interpretation, enriching the legacy of the "City Hunter" universe.
