In a significant reshuffle at Disney, Debra O'Connell has ascended to the crucial position of Chairman of U.S. Entertainment Television. This new role places her at the helm of creative direction for all of Disney's television properties across broadcast, cable, and streaming in the United States. The announcement comes as part of a broader organizational restructuring spearheaded by Dana Walden, who is transitioning into her new capacity as Disney's chief creative officer under the leadership of incoming CEO Josh D'Amaro. This strategic alignment is set to take effect on March 19, following the company's annual shareholders meeting, marking a new era for Disney's entertainment division.

Disney's Entertainment Division Undergoes Leadership Changes with Key Appointments

On March 16, 2026, a major leadership announcement from The Walt Disney Company revealed significant changes within its U.S. Entertainment Television division. Long-standing Disney executive Debra O'Connell, known for her extensive experience overseeing the financial structures of many of Disney's prominent television assets, has been appointed Chairman of U.S. Entertainment Television. This newly created position grants O'Connell central creative oversight across all of Disney's domestic broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. This strategic move is a cornerstone of the new management framework unveiled by Dana Walden, who recently stepped into her elevated role as Disney's chief creative officer. Both Walden and Josh D'Amaro, the incoming CEO, are scheduled to formally commence their new duties on March 19, concluding the tenure of current CEO Bob Iger. O'Connell will continue to report directly to Dana Walden and maintain her supervision of ABC News operations, a responsibility she has held since 2024. While many senior entertainment executives, including Alan Bergman for film studios and John Landgraf for FX, will retain their current roles, some notable adjustments have been made. Joe Earley and Adam Smith have been named co-presidents of the company's direct-to-consumer business, jointly managing the strategy and financial performance of Disney+ and Hulu, reporting to both Walden and Bergman. Earley will also head content strategy for direct-to-consumer services, while Smith will continue as chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, reporting to ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. Additionally, Walden will now oversee games and digital entertainment, with Sean Shoptaw, the executive vice president of that division, reporting to her. This expands Walden's purview to include Disney's overall video games business, notably its collaboration with Epic Games. O'Connell's career at Disney spans several decades, having previously served as president and general manager of WABC in New York, managing the business operations of the syndicated program "Live with Kelly and Ryan," and leading national ad sales for the company's stations group.

The strategic leadership changes at Disney, particularly Debra O'Connell's elevation and the broader executive restructuring under Dana Walden, signal a clear intent to consolidate creative control and enhance synergistic opportunities across Disney's diverse entertainment ecosystem. This move reflects a forward-looking vision to strengthen the company's position in the ever-evolving media landscape, emphasizing seamless integration between traditional and digital platforms. It underscores the importance of experienced leadership in navigating the complexities of modern entertainment, particularly in maximizing content creation and distribution for a global audience.
