Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe, has once again affirmed his commitment to the development of Haunted Chocolatier, his eagerly awaited follow-up to the wildly successful Stardew Valley. Recent public discourse among fans had sparked worries about the project's status, particularly given the prolonged development period. Barone, however, has dispelled these anxieties, confirming the game is very much in progress and will see its completion.

Developer Addresses Fan Speculation Regarding "Haunted Chocolatier" Progress

In a recent online statement dated January 28, 2026, Eric Barone, the acclaimed creator behind the indie hit Stardew Valley, proactively responded to growing fan concerns regarding his next major title, Haunted Chocolatier. Barone acknowledged the extended development timeline for the chocolate-themed life simulation game, stating, "Yep, it’s taking a while to finish the game. That’s okay." He also candidly admitted to potentially announcing the game prematurely, though he maintained valid reasons for doing so at the time.

A significant portion of the speculation Barone addressed revolved around two primary "false assumptions." The first and most prevalent rumor suggested that Haunted Chocolatier might be abandoned altogether, with its elements eventually integrated into Stardew Valley—a game that has consistently received free updates since its 2017 launch, including a recent Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in December 2025. Barone emphatically denied this, stating, "No. First, I am not going to abandon Haunted Chocolatier. But even if I did, I am not going to add it to Stardew Valley." He further explained the technical infeasibility of such a merger, noting that Haunted Chocolatier is being built from the ground up on a distinct "engine."

The second assumption Barone tackled questioned whether ongoing Stardew Valley updates served as covert testing grounds for Haunted Chocolatier. He dismissed this notion outright, clarifying that his work on each game is separate and focused. When developing one, his thoughts are not on the other. He reiterated the fundamental differences between the two titles, emphasizing that their content is not interchangeable, and he intends to preserve the unique elements of Haunted Chocolatier for its standalone release.

Regarding the continuous updates to Stardew Valley, Barone explained that these stem from the game's enduring popularity and his own ongoing creative impulses to enhance it for its expanding player base, not from any burnout related to Haunted Chocolatier. He reaffirmed his previous stance on the release date, stressing that the game "will come out when it's done," refuting any specific timeline such as 2030, which had been misconstrued from earlier comments. This steadfast commitment to quality over speed has been a consistent message from the developer throughout the project's journey.

The creative journey of developing a video game, particularly one with high expectations following a beloved predecessor, presents unique challenges. ConcernedApe's transparency and dedication to his craft offer valuable lessons in patience and artistic integrity. In an industry often driven by rapid release cycles and hype, his approach reminds us that true innovation and lasting quality often require unhurried development. For players, this signifies a promise of a well-polished and deeply engaging experience, rewarding their anticipation with a product crafted with genuine passion and meticulous attention to detail.
