Apple Cancels "Palm Royale" After Two Seasons

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

The series "Palm Royale," a production of Apple, will not proceed beyond its second season. This decision follows the conclusion of its second installment, which aired its final episode on January 14. The show, which explored the intricate social dynamics of Palm Beach high society, had previously earned significant recognition, including multiple Emmy Award nominations.

"Palm Royale" featured a stellar ensemble cast, with Kristen Wiig leading as Maxine Dellacorte. Her character's journey chronicled an ambitious outsider's determined efforts to join the exclusive circles of 1960s Palm Beach, navigating a world defined by opulence and cutthroat social climbing. Other notable cast members included Carol Burnett, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Ricky Martin, among others, each contributing to the series' vibrant portrayal of its unique setting.

The second season of the show focused on Maxine's struggles as she faced ostracization following a scandalous public incident that marked the culmination of the first season. The series finale unveiled a pivotal revelation involving Norma Dellacorte, played by Carol Burnett, adding an unexpected twist to the narrative that now serves as the show's conclusion.

The program itself was an adaptation of Juliet McDaniel's novel, "Mr. & Mrs. American Pie," with Abe Sylvia at the helm as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Sylvia collaborated with a team of executive producers, including Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, and Jaywalker Pictures, to bring this distinctive vision to the screen.

"Palm Royale" was celebrated for its compelling storytelling and strong performances, particularly Kristen Wiig's, who received nominations for an Actor Award and a GLAAD Media Award during the second season. The series' initial season had garnered an impressive total of 11 Emmy nominations, highlighting its critical acclaim and impact within the television landscape.

The announcement of the series' termination comes after a run that showcased a blend of comedy and drama, capturing the essence of an era and the aspirations of its characters. Despite its critical success and talented cast, Apple has decided to conclude "Palm Royale" after two seasons, leaving its narrative arc to culminate with the events of the recently aired finale.
