Adventure Time: Side Quests - A Return to Roots

Amy Hennig

Renowned video game writer and director, known for her narrative work on the "Uncharted" series.

The 2018 San Diego Comic-Con panel for the final season of Adventure Time remains a cherished memory for many fans. Cast and crew gathered, sharing anecdotes, jokes, and, notably, performing iconic songs from the show. John DiMaggio, the voice of Jake the Dog, energetically led a rendition of “Bacon Pancakes,” while Olivia Olson, Marceline the Vampire Queen, delivered a poignant performance of “I’m Just Your Problem.” Rebecca Sugar, a writer and storyboard artist, concluded the musical segment with her touching song “Time Adventure,” a moment that brought tears to DiMaggio’s eyes, signaling the close of an era for millions.

Now, years later, DiMaggio reflects on that emotional period as he discusses the franchise’s latest evolution, Side Quests. This new spinoff, set between the first and second seasons of the original series, aims for a lighter, more youthful tone, harkening back to Adventure Time’s early days. DiMaggio’s initial reaction to his past tears quickly turns to excitement for Side Quests, praising Sasha Knight, the new voice of Finn, and expressing joy over the team’s reunion. This fresh approach is a deliberate shift from recent spinoffs like Distant Lands, which explored deeper lore, and Fionna and Cake, which delved into multiverse narratives. Side Quests, with its 20-episode debut on Hulu and Disney Plus, revives the episodic charm of the original, offering humorous 10-minute stories that reset with each installment.

Visually, Side Quests also marks a departure, presenting a refined storybook aesthetic with flatter animation, richer backgrounds, and cleaner linework, signaling a new visual identity for the series. While other spinoffs like Bubblegum and Marceline will continue the main storyline, and Heyo BMO targets a preschool audience, Side Quests carves a unique path. It strikes a balance between familiar territory and innovative storytelling, ensuring that eight years after its tearful farewell, Adventure Time continues to evolve, promising an exciting future for its devoted fanbase.

The enduring legacy of Adventure Time, continually reinventing itself through diverse spinoffs, demonstrates the power of creative evolution. By embracing new formats and revisiting its roots, the franchise offers fresh perspectives while retaining the heart that endeared it to audiences worldwide. This ability to adapt and innovate, while staying true to its core, exemplifies how art can transcend time and captivate new generations.
