World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is venturing into a new entertainment format by collaborating with ReelShort, a leading platform for vertical microdramas. This strategic partnership aims to produce an original live-action series, integrating the high-octane drama of professional wrestling with the engaging, short-form narrative style of microdramas.
WWE and ReelShort Join Forces for Innovative Microdrama Series
On July 14, 2026, it was announced that WWE is teaming up with ReelShort to create a unique live-action microdrama. This pioneering project will feature well-known WWE personalities such as Scottish wrestlers Drew McIntyre and Joe Hendry, along with SmackDown luminary Jacob Fatu. These athletic performers will share the screen with veteran microdrama actors Marc Herrmann, known for his roles in productions like Fiancée’s Betrayal and Dante’s Inferno, and Chase Mattson, recognized for Married to the Don and My Duplicated Husband. Additional WWE stars are also expected to make appearances.
Ben Houser, head of original content and development at WWE, emphasized that this collaboration is designed to offer a fresh narrative experience to the loyal WWE Universe while simultaneously attracting new viewers through ReelShort's innovative platform. The microdrama is scheduled to commence filming next month, with its debut anticipated in the autumn season.
ReelShort has rapidly become a significant player in the burgeoning U.S. vertical content market. The company has a history of diverse creative partnerships, including a co-production agreement with Korean studio Showbox (responsible for Exhuma) earlier this year, and successful microdramas like Charmed to Meet You and its sequel, developed in conjunction with the shoe brand Crocs. Sammie Hao, ReelShort's head of talent and business development, highlighted that these brand collaborations are evolving beyond simple product placement, striving to create comprehensive entertainment ecosystems that foster cultural moments and audience engagement.
Traditionally, vertical content has garnered a predominantly female viewership. However, ReelShort has actively sought to broaden its appeal to male audiences, as evidenced by projects like the 2025 thriller American Sniper: The Last Round. The alliance with WWE represents a further step in this direction, leveraging wrestling's inherent melodrama and spectacular stunts, which are particularly well-suited to the microdrama format. This format is adept at captivating viewers with short, minute-long episodes that often conclude with dramatic twists and cliffhangers, encouraging continuous engagement.
This collaboration marks a fascinating convergence of sports entertainment and digital short-form content. It not only broadens WWE's reach into new media landscapes but also provides ReelShort with a robust brand to attract a more diverse audience. The initiative underscores a growing trend in entertainment where traditional media giants are exploring innovative platforms to deliver content, adapting to evolving audience consumption habits and seeking new avenues for engagement. The combination of WWE's theatricality and ReelShort's concise storytelling promises a compelling viewing experience, potentially setting a precedent for future cross-industry entertainment ventures.
