The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), through its newly established Institute for the Moving Image, is significantly expanding its industry focus this year. This expansion includes the introduction of its inaugural slate of eight Works in Progress (WIP) and eight international co-productions. The curated selection showcases a rich tapestry of narratives and cultural backgrounds, featuring diverse projects such as India's Don Palathara's psychological drama "Monkeyplay," Jeissy Tromplz's Venezuelan documentary "Three Houses," and José Luis Isoard Arrubarrena's magical-realist narrative "Los Vivos y los Patos" from Mexico. Additionally, the lineup highlights Canadian talent with Janessa St. Pierre's "Hair or No Hair," a feature expanding on her short film about alopecia, and Jason Lapere's "The Auschwitz Volunteer," which recounts the heroic true story of a Polish soldier infiltrating Auschwitz to establish a resistance. These selections underscore VIFF's renewed dedication to fostering a more international and project-centric approach in its industry programming, building on four decades of supporting artistic development and global co-production.

Kyle Fostner, VIFF’s executive director, emphasizes that this model is intentionally intimate and hands-on, diverging from the typical large-scale conference or traditional festival lab format. The primary objective is to cultivate meaningful direct interactions between filmmakers and key industry decision-makers, tailoring meetings to address the unique needs of each project.
