Uninspired Depiction of Irish Mob in 'The Westies' TV Series

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

The new MGM+ series, 'The Westies,' attempts to delve into the criminal underworld of New York's Irish mob, focusing on their efforts to profit from the construction of the Javits Center. However, this production, featuring acclaimed actors such as J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver, unfortunately falls short of delivering an engaging or original take on the well-trodden crime genre. The narrative struggles to find its footing, presenting a rather unremarkable portrayal of a historical period and its notorious figures.

A primary criticism of 'The Westies' lies in its underdeveloped characters and a general lack of depth. J.K. Simmons plays Eamon Sweeney, a mob leader whose pragmatic ruthlessness is evident, yet the series often prioritizes the misguided loyalties of his protégé, Jimmy Roarke, over logical reasoning. The show's attempt to weave in elements like the Irish Republican Army, through Jimmy's girlfriend Bridget, feels tangential and fails to add meaningful layers to the central plot. Furthermore, the period setting of the 1980s is not fully utilized, missing opportunities to offer specific insights into the era or the evolving dynamics of New York's ethnic enclaves.

Ultimately, 'The Westies' struggles to captivate its audience, largely due to its uninspired approach to storytelling and character presentation. The series introduces a cast of characters, including corrupt police officer Glenn Keenan, whose redemption arc feels unearned and whose personal struggles often overshadow the central criminal narrative. While J.K. Simmons delivers a performance true to his esteemed reputation, even his presence cannot elevate a show that lacks compelling protagonists and a distinctive voice. The production's choice of filming location outside of New York also detracts from its authenticity, resulting in a crime drama that, despite its intentions, fails to evoke genuine interest or emotion.

This series serves as a reminder that even with a strong cast and a rich historical backdrop, a compelling narrative requires more than just the elements of crime and drama. It demands depth, originality, and a clear vision to truly resonate with viewers and offer a meaningful contribution to its genre.
