As reported by the BBC, the proposed curfew would render popular applications such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube inaccessible between midnight and 6 a.m. for older teenagers. This development follows a previous announcement in June regarding a complete social media ban for children under 16, which is slated for implementation in spring 2027, subject to parliamentary approval. The platforms targeted by the outright ban for under-16s encompass Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. Notably, messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal are exempt from this prohibition. Beyond access restrictions, the government's proposals also extend to mitigating the effects of "addictive" features such as auto-play and infinite scrolling, which would be deactivated. Furthermore, measures are being considered to promote the safe use of AI chatbots among under-18s, including mandatory breaks to encourage healthier digital habits.
