Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film & TV Festival has announced the appointment of Peter Debruge, formerly a leading film critic for Variety, as its new director. This significant change in leadership sees Debruge taking the reins from Claudette Godfrey, who is concluding her distinguished nearly two-decade tenure as vice president of the Austin-based event. His long-standing involvement and deep understanding of the global film landscape are anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the festival's cinematic and television programming.

Debruge's career includes an impressive 20-year run at Variety, where he notably served as the magazine's third chief film critic in its 120-year history. During this time, he penned over 2,000 reviews and extensively covered numerous film festivals across the globe, including frequent visits to SXSW. His experience also extends to participating in prestigious festival juries, such as those at Cannes, São Paulo, and Reykjavik, and he is a co-founder of the Animation is Film festival in Los Angeles. A native Texan, Debruge's roots in Waco and his film studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he co-edited the Daily Texan's entertainment section with former SXSW film programmer Matt Dentler, further cement his connection to the festival's origins and its unique spirit.

Jenny Connelly, SXSW's director in charge, expressed enthusiasm for Debruge's appointment, highlighting his unique perspective and passion for storytelling, which resonate with the festival's core mission. Debruge himself shared his profound gratitude and excitement for returning to a festival that holds immense personal significance for him, acknowledging the groundbreaking work of his predecessors and expressing his eagerness to uphold SXSW's legacy of supporting visionary creative talent. Godfrey's contributions to SXSW, including her pivotal role in showcasing acclaimed filmmakers and programming the Oscar-winning film "Everything Everywhere All at Once," have left an indelible mark, for which Greg Rosenbaum, senior vice president of programming, conveyed deep appreciation, praising her for cultivating a program that is both globally relevant and deeply committed to discovery.

The transition of leadership at SXSW marks a new chapter for the renowned festival. With Peter Debruge's extensive background in film criticism and his profound connection to the cinematic world, the festival is poised to continue its tradition of fostering innovative storytelling and celebrating diverse voices in film and television. This evolution promises to inspire audiences and creators alike, reinforcing SXSW's position as a vital platform for artistic expression and cultural exchange.
