“Succession” actors Peter Friedman and David Rasche, celebrated for their portrayals of Frank Vernon and Karl Muller, respectively, are coming together once again for a new short film titled “Elderwood.” This exclusive project, helmed by director Luke Gardiner, also features the talented Laura Esterman.

A Tale of Unexpected Discovery in Later Life

The “Succession” Stars’ New Venture: “Elderwood”

Peter Friedman and David Rasche, familiar faces from the hit HBO series “Succession,” where they played key figures in Logan Roy’s inner circle, are collaborating on a new short film. The project, titled “Elderwood,” sees the two acclaimed actors sharing the screen once more, marking a highly anticipated reunion for fans of their work.

Exploring a Unique Narrative: Atticus’s Journey

Directed by Luke Gardiner, the 15-minute film introduces audiences to Atticus, a quiet widower whose structured life is unexpectedly upended. His world shifts when a lively, free-spirited couple becomes his new neighbors, propelling him into an unforeseen path of self-discovery and growth during his twilight years. Laura Esterman, known for her roles in “Addams Family Values” and “I Know This Much Is True,” also stars in this intriguing production.

Behind the Scenes: Production and Filming Location

The screenplay for “Elderwood” was co-written by director Luke Gardiner and Lucia Perri. Production took place at the picturesque Drum Hill Senior Living facility located in Peekskill, New York, providing an authentic backdrop for the film's narrative.

Cast Perspectives on the Project and Director

Laura Esterman lauded Gardiner’s directorial prowess, highlighting his clear artistic vision. She expressed immense satisfaction in portraying such a fresh and original character alongside actors whose work she deeply admires. Rasche echoed these sentiments, describing the script as unusually compelling and profoundly moving. He commended Friedman and Esterman’s performances and noted the enjoyable atmosphere on set. Friedman added that he had never encountered a story quite like it.

Director’s Inspiration: Senior Living and Coming-of-Age

In a statement, Luke Gardiner revealed the personal inspiration behind “Elderwood.” He shared observations from his teenage years, witnessing the intricate romantic dynamics within senior living communities, which he felt mirrored his own emotional development during adolescence. Gardiner aimed to blend the established visual language of coming-of-age stories with the unexpected setting of senior living, creating a unique exploration of life’s later stages. He emphasized the crucial role of finding a vibrant community like Drum Hill, whose residents and environment continually offered insights, and assembling a remarkable cast. Gardiner also praised the experienced actors for their dedication to independent filmmaking, trusting a director significantly younger than themselves.

The Production Team

“Elderwood” was brought to life by producers Oliver Schneider and Casey Friedman of February Problem Films, a new independent production company based in New York. They collaborated with Jack Levine, Haiba Khan, and Joe Meyer. IACON Pictures, founded by Isaac F. Davis, provided essential production services for the film.
