Remembering Peggy Steffans: Actress and Muse of Joseph Sarno

Stephen King

Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

Peggy Steffans, an actress renowned for her appearances in 1960s art-house cinema, and the dedicated spouse of filmmaker Joseph Sarno, has sadly departed at 87 years old. Her son, film editor Matthew Sarno, confirmed her passing from respiratory failure in New York City. Steffans, often credited as Cleo Nova in productions by her future husband, made a notable mark in several films that explored themes of sexuality and human relationships.

After tying the knot with Sarno in 1970, Steffans decided to step away from acting, yet remained an integral part of his creative process. She seamlessly transitioned into various behind-the-camera roles, contributing her talents as an assistant director, costume designer, set decorator, and production designer on numerous projects. Their enduring collaboration and life story were beautifully chronicled in Wiktor Ericsson's 2013 documentary, 'The Sarnos: A Life in Dirty Movies,' offering audiences a rare glimpse into their unique bond and artistic partnership. Steffans herself reflected on the documentary in a 2013 interview, expressing her appreciation for how it honored their shared journey and work.

Born Peggy Silverman on October 11, 1938, in New York, Steffans pursued her passion for the performing arts from a young age. After completing her education at Bayside High School and attending Skidmore College, she honed her craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her early career saw her participate in significant works like Adolfas Mekas's 'Hallelujah the Hills' (1963), which led her to the Cannes Film Festival, and a Broadway debut in Paddy Chayefsky's 'The Passion of Josef D.' Her deep connection with future Oscar-nominated production designer Polly Platt also began during this period. Steffans’ cinematic collaborations with Sarno included a series of black and white films in the mid-1960s, showcasing her diverse acting range before she moved into her multifaceted behind-the-scenes roles.

Peggy Steffans' life exemplified a profound commitment to artistry and partnership. Her journey, from a captivating actress to a vital creative force behind the camera, alongside Joseph Sarno, illustrates the power of shared vision and mutual support in both personal and professional spheres. Their story, immortalized in film, serves as an inspiration, reminding us that true collaboration can transcend conventional boundaries, fostering a legacy of innovative and heartfelt work that continues to resonate with audiences, celebrating the depth of human connection and artistic expression.
