Redfall Developers' Post-Layoff Effort to Patch the Game

Roberta Williams

Pioneer of graphic adventure games, co-founder of Sierra On-Line, and creator of "King's Quest."

Redfall, a title from Arkane Austin, was met with widespread disappointment from both critics and players, ultimately contributing to the studio's shutdown by Microsoft. The game was widely regarded as a significant misstep, especially for a studio known for critically acclaimed titles like Prey.

Following the studio's closure, the narrative often points to Microsoft's alleged heavy-handed approach in steering Arkane Austin, a developer renowned for immersive simulations, towards creating a live-service game. While there's truth to this, as evidenced by the departure of the studio's founder who felt a misalignment in creative direction, it wasn't solely Microsoft's influence. Harvey Smith, the former studio director, revealed in an interview with The Game Business that a sense of misguided optimism within Arkane itself led them to embrace the live-service model, believing they could adapt their unique style to this format. Smith recounted a tumultuous development period, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, mass resignations, and various unforeseen global events, contributing to a deeply chaotic environment.

Despite the game's initial poor reception and the subsequent layoffs, Smith's commitment to Redfall remained unwavering. He, along with Ben Horne, the former production director, and a small group of ex-colleagues, implored Microsoft to allow them to return and release the 1.4 patch, which addressed numerous bugs and improvements. Remarkably, Microsoft granted their request. This post-layoff effort resulted in the release of a patch that, while not a complete turnaround, significantly enhanced the game experience. This unusual dedication highlights the team's profound belief in their work, even after their employment ended.

The story of Redfall's final patch is a poignant reminder of the passion and perseverance within the game development community. It demonstrates that even in the face of commercial failure and studio closure, the desire to deliver a better product can motivate individuals to go above and beyond. This commitment to quality and the resilience shown by the developers offer an inspiring example of dedication in adversity, underlining the human spirit's ability to strive for excellence even when the odds are stacked against it.
