Actor Paul Bettany recently addressed the swirling rumors connecting him to the iconic role of Lord Voldemort in the forthcoming HBO television adaptation of the 'Harry Potter' saga. Despite widespread speculation among fans, Bettany clarified that he has not yet received any official outreach from HBO concerning the part, though he expressed his admiration for the beloved wizarding world franchise.

During an appearance at the Saturn Awards on March 8, the 'WandaVision' star was directly asked about the possibility of portraying the infamous dark wizard. Bettany candidly stated, "I haven't heard anything about that. I mean I'm a big fan of the IP, and I'm a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about it." This statement effectively puts to rest, for now, the fervent discussions surrounding his potential involvement. Representatives for Bettany offered no further comments, and Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio behind the series, also remained silent on the matter when approached by 'Entertainment Weekly'.

This isn't the first time an actor has been at the center of Voldemort casting rumors. Previously, 'Deadline' reported that Cillian Murphy was being considered for the role, a character famously brought to life by Ralph Fiennes in the original film series. Murphy, however, dispelled these rumors last year, noting on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast in September 2025, "I don’t know anything about that. I mean, also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend. So, good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes.” He further solidified his position in February, telling 'The Times' that he was "categorically not" playing Voldemort.

The HBO 'Harry Potter' series aims to offer a more in-depth exploration of J.K. Rowling's seven-book series, dedicating each season to one of the novels. Production is currently underway in the U.K., with an anticipated premiere in "early 2027," as announced by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content. The core trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley have already been cast, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout stepping into these pivotal roles after a rigorous audition process that saw tens of thousands of children vying for the parts. Other notable cast members confirmed include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. Discussions for a television adaptation of 'Harry Potter' have been ongoing since at least January 2021, promising fans a richly detailed and expansive return to the wizarding world.

The casting of Lord Voldemort remains one of the most highly anticipated announcements for the upcoming HBO 'Harry Potter' series. While Paul Bettany has expressed his appreciation for the franchise, he has clearly indicated that no formal discussions have taken place. Fans eagerly await further news on who will ultimately embody the iconic villain, following in the footsteps of the acclaimed Ralph Fiennes.
