Panasonic Holdings has unveiled its strategic roadmap to initiate large-scale manufacturing of battery cells specifically designed for data center operations at its facility in Kansas, USA. This ambitious undertaking is slated to commence by the conclusion of fiscal year 2028, which extends into March 2029. The company's commitment to advancing its energy solutions is underscored by a substantial financial allocation towards AI infrastructure, with a particular focus on enhancing the capabilities of its Energy unit, a key supplier to major electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla.

The Japanese electronics giant disclosed its financial strategy, earmarking approximately 350 billion yen (equivalent to $2.18 billion USD) from a total investment of 500 billion yen for AI infrastructure between fiscal years 2026 and 2028. This significant portion is directed towards the Energy division, reflecting a robust commitment to its battery production capabilities. The remaining 150 billion yen will be channeled into its Industry segment, indicating a diversified approach to technological advancement.

Further expanding its global footprint, Panasonic Energy has outlined plans for constructing a third manufacturing plant in Mexico. This new facility is also projected to begin mass production within fiscal year 2028, signaling an aggressive push to meet anticipated demand for its energy storage solutions across various markets.

Kazuo Tadanobu, the CEO of Panasonic Energy, articulated an ambitious vision for the unit's financial performance. He stated that the projected sales target of 950 billion yen for data center-related energy storage systems by fiscal year 2028 represents a 'minimum commitment'. Tadanobu expressed confidence that the business unit has the potential to surpass this figure, aiming for sales exceeding 1 trillion yen, highlighting the company's strong belief in the growth trajectory of the data center battery market.

In essence, Panasonic's strategic moves underscore a clear focus on bolstering its position in the rapidly evolving data center and energy storage sectors. Through significant investment in production capacity in the United States and Mexico, and a forward-looking financial commitment to AI infrastructure, the company is poised to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced battery technologies, particularly those powering critical data infrastructure.
