OMV Petrom, a Romanian energy firm, has moved forward with its Gabare solar and battery storage initiative in Bulgaria, committing a substantial investment to this renewable energy endeavor. This project represents a pivotal step for the company in expanding its green energy portfolio within the region.

The Gabare development, situated in the Byala Slatina area, is planned to feature a photovoltaic installation with a capacity of roughly 415MW-peak, alongside a battery system capable of storing about 600MWh of energy. This significant undertaking, a joint venture with Enery, is expected to receive an investment of around €300 million, with a third of that sum dedicated to the storage component, underscoring the importance of energy storage in modern grids. The partnership with Enery through Dunav Solar Plant, with each company holding a 50% stake, aims to enhance grid flexibility and stability.

With all necessary regulatory approvals secured, the project is now ready for construction to commence. Power generation is anticipated to begin in 2028, with OMV Petrom slated to acquire half of the electricity produced through a power purchase agreement. This strategic move not only diversifies OMV Petrom's energy assets but also strengthens its presence in Bulgaria, where it already operates numerous filling stations and engages in natural gas sales and offshore exploration.
