New Cast Members Join Gender-Swapped 'Present Laughter' Production

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Acclaimed novelist ("Americanah") whose essays and talks offer sharp critiques of culture and feminism.

Actors James Dreyfus and Adrian Lukis are set to join Tracy-Ann Oberman in a contemporary, gender-reversed adaptation of Noël Coward's renowned play, 'Present Laughter.' This innovative production will debut at the Theatre Royal Bath, offering a fresh interpretation of the classic narrative. Oberman, who is also spearheading the reimagining of the play, will take on the central role of Geri Essendine, a female rendition of the character originally known as Garry Essendine, a role first performed by Coward himself. This unique approach promises to bring new dimensions to the beloved theatrical work.

The play introduces Geri Essendine as a highly accomplished actress, perpetually in her late thirties, whose captivating personality, sharp wit, and undeniable charm have garnered her a vast following of devoted admirers and an extensive circle of acquaintances. As Geri prepares for an upcoming theatrical tour in Africa, she finds herself unexpectedly entangled in the affections of numerous potential suitors. Adding to the delightful chaos are her ever-patient secretary, her estranged husband, and a young playwright whose obsession with her borders on infatuation. The unfolding narrative explores Geri's humorous struggle to extricate herself from their incessant demands and tightening grip, raising the question of whether, deep down, she truly desires to escape their company.

Adding to the esteemed cast, James Dreyfus, known for his role in 'Notting Hill,' will portray the character of Monty, while Adrian Lukis, celebrated for his performance in 'The Crown,' will embody Len. The production is under the skilled direction of Lindsay Posner, a veteran director with a notable track record, including directing Dominic West in 'A View From the Bridge' and Tamsin Greig in 'The Deep Blue Sea.'

'Present Laughter' is a collaborative effort between Theatre Royal Bath Productions and Augusta Productions. Following its premiere at the Theatre Royal Bath, where it will run from August 26 to September 5, the production is slated for a comprehensive tour across the United Kingdom. This tour will allow a broader audience to experience the innovative gender-swapped rendition of Coward's work. Oberman's previous acclaimed performance as a gender-reversed Shylock in 'The Merchant of Venice 1936' highlights her talent for reinterpreting classic roles. Her extensive acting career also includes appearances in popular series such as 'The Witcher,' 'Ridley Road,' and 'It’s a Sin.'

This fresh interpretation of 'Present Laughter' with a gender-swapped lead role, alongside the addition of seasoned actors James Dreyfus and Adrian Lukis, aims to revitalize Noël Coward's classic play for a contemporary audience. Under the direction of Lindsay Posner, the production promises to deliver a compelling and entertaining theatrical experience, exploring themes of fame, desire, and entanglement through a new lens, and is set to captivate audiences both in Bath and across the UK during its tour.
