Netflix Explores Fast Food Culture with 'Big Chicken' Documentary

Netflix is venturing into the realm of dietary documentaries with its upcoming production, 'Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy.' This new film draws parallels to the acclaimed 2004 documentary 'Super Size Me,' which explored the health consequences of a McDonald's-only diet. Comedian Mo Gilligan will undertake a similar immersive challenge, consuming only fried chicken for nearly a month, providing a contemporary examination of fast food consumption.

'Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy,' produced by Mindhouse, the studio behind 'Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere,' is described by Netflix as a "bold experiment." The documentary will premiere on August 5th and aims to uncover the hidden costs of our cravings. Gilligan's journey will span from South London to the United States, investigating the historical roots of fried chicken and the societal, economic, and industrial factors driving its widespread consumption. The film will also address the health, environmental, and cultural impacts of this popular dish, with Gilligan, as a Black British comedian, confronting and re-framing negative perceptions and cultural appropriation of fried chicken.

This venture notably echoes a previous work by the late Morgan Spurlock, who, after 'Super Size Me,' also released a documentary focusing on the chicken industry titled 'Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!' While Spurlock's sequel involved him establishing a pop-up chicken restaurant to expose industry practices rather than consuming large quantities of fast food himself, the thematic connection remains striking. Netflix's new documentary promises to delve deeply into the complexities of our relationship with fast food, particularly fried chicken, offering insights into its origins, cultural significance, and the broader implications of its mass production and consumption.

By shedding light on the historical, social, and health dimensions of fast food, particularly fried chicken, 'Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy' encourages viewers to critically evaluate their dietary choices and the food industry's influence. It promotes a deeper understanding of food systems and their impact on personal well-being and the planet, fostering informed decisions and a more conscious approach to eating.
