A groundbreaking podcast, born from the confines of a prison, is now inspiring a feature-length documentary. This film will chronicle the extraordinary path of its creators, showcasing how their unique narratives from within the correctional system have resonated globally, challenging preconceived notions about incarceration and personal transformation.

Insight into the 'Ear Hustle' Documentary Journey

On September 15, 2026, it was officially announced that the critically acclaimed podcast, 'Ear Hustle,' is being developed into a documentary feature. This compelling project is being spearheaded by filmmaker Erika Cohn, with legendary actor Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary serving as executive producers under their Revelations Entertainment banner. Joining them in executive production are James Younger, Insiyah Haveliwala, and Patty Quillin, while Jaz Kealoha Berger and Rajal Pitroda are co-producing alongside Cohn.

'Ear Hustle' first captivated audiences in 2017, emerging directly from California's San Quentin State Prison. It was co-founded by Bay Area visual artist Nigel Poor, working collaboratively with Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams, both of whom were incarcerated at the time. The documentary aims to follow Poor, Woods, and Williams as they expand the podcast's reach, visiting correctional facilities worldwide and reflecting on how their project has evolved from its modest beginnings. The film will highlight the significant influence of 'Ear Hustle,' which has been lauded by outlets like IME as one of the top 100 podcasts ever, in reshaping public discourse around imprisonment and detailing the profound personal changes experienced by its creators.

Erika Cohn expressed her deep connection to the project, noting the creators' remarkable ability to infuse humor, intimacy, and complexity into often-unseen stories. She emphasized the documentary as an opportunity to focus on the storytellers themselves, exploring the wider movement their work has ignited and its transformative effect on their lives. Cohn, who also finds her own life shaped by the narratives she tells, feels a strong resonance with their journey.

The podcast 'Ear Hustle' remains a vital part of the Radiotopia podcast network, a platform powered by the esteemed public media organization PRX.

The creation of this documentary underscores the power of storytelling to bridge divides and humanize experiences often marginalized by society. It serves as a powerful reminder that compelling narratives can emerge from the most unexpected places, offering unique perspectives and fostering empathy. This film will undoubtedly inspire further conversations about justice, rehabilitation, and the universal human desire for expression and connection.
