A Modder's Grand Theft Auto Multiverse: Seamless Travel Between Classic Cities

Amy Hennig

Renowned video game writer and director, known for her narrative work on the "Uncharted" series.

For many years, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has repeatedly revisited its well-known urban landscapes, presenting progressively more elaborate versions of Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. However, a simultaneous exploration of all three locales has not been possible for players since the initial installment of the series.

This limitation has now been overcome by a skilled modder who developed a modification allowing instant transitions between the settings of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. This groundbreaking achievement is made possible through the ingenious use of in-game portals. The creator, DryxioGTA, showcased this mod in a video, demonstrating effortless movement between vividly colored portals situated on Grove Street in San Andreas. Stepping through these portals instantly teleports the player to the corresponding game world and location, complete with the appropriate character switch.

DryxioGTA explained that all three games operate within a single process, sharing a common Direct 3D device. Each portal functions as a dynamic GPU texture, with the respective game actively running behind it, rather than displaying a pre-recorded video. Furthermore, the mod ensures that each game world maintains its individual save files, missions, and configurations, continuously updating elements like traffic and physics in real time. A particularly impressive aspect is the ability to interact across these interconnected worlds, such as shooting through a portal to affect civilians in another city, which subsequently triggers an in-game wanted level.

This extraordinary modification has captivated the Grand Theft Auto community, with many expressing awe at its innovative capabilities. Comments highlight the unprecedented level of interaction it introduces, such as the ability to engage with other game worlds through the portals. The mod's creation humorously precedes the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is expected in November. This anticipation has significantly influenced the gaming industry, causing other developers to adjust their release schedules to avoid direct competition with Rockstar's highly anticipated title.

The creativity and technical prowess demonstrated by this modder exemplify the boundless potential of the gaming community. Such innovations push the boundaries of what is possible within existing game frameworks, fostering a deeper sense of immersion and player agency. This spirit of innovation not only enhances current gaming experiences but also inspires future developments, reminding us that with passion and ingenuity, virtual worlds can always offer new and exciting possibilities.
