The Media Landscape in the Age of AI: A Call for Coalition

Ricky Gervais

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

At the CPH:SUMMIT, a significant event exploring the future of media, Arte President Bruno Patino delivered a compelling keynote address highlighting the transformative, yet potentially perilous, role of artificial intelligence in shaping the global media landscape. Amid discussions on media consolidation, evolving industry dynamics, and concerns over freedom of expression, Patino's insights offered a critical perspective on the challenges and opportunities confronting audiovisual professionals, researchers, and policymakers.

Patino's address underscored several key shifts, beginning with the transition from a "pull behavior" where individuals actively sought information, to a "push era" characterized by algorithmic content delivery. This shift, driven by social media and AI, has led to a saturation of content and an unprecedented concentration of power among global media entities. He warned that this environment risks the industrial and technological standardization of content, paradoxically reducing diversity despite an explosion in production. Furthermore, Patino highlighted the fragmentation of our collective understanding of reality, jeopardizing the ideals of culture as a source of emancipation, fact-based information supporting democracy, and public broadcasting as a form of collective solidarity, all of which are fundamental to the European social and cultural model.

In response to these challenges, Patino proposed a "Relationship Economy," acknowledging that AI blurs the lines between human and machine, authenticity and fiction, leading to a potential "invisibility" for diverse voices. He argued that to counter the overwhelming influence of U.S.-based tech giants, particularly in terms of content discoverability and production, Europe must embrace coalitions. He positioned Arte, with its network of 14 public broadcasters and multilingual programming, as a model for this collaborative future, emphasizing a collective endeavor built on curiosity, discovery, and openness, rather than aspiring to become a mega-structure like a European Netflix.

The media industry stands at a critical juncture, with AI presenting both immense possibilities and profound risks. By fostering strong coalitions and championing diverse narratives, we can navigate this evolving landscape, ensuring that media remains a force for enlightenment and connection rather than an instrument of homogenization and fragmentation. This commitment to collaboration and varied perspectives is essential for cultivating a media environment that truly serves the public good and enriches our shared human experience.
