Marketing in the Creator Economy: How Platforms and Fans Drive Engagement

The landscape of entertainment marketing has been profoundly reshaped by artificial intelligence and social media, necessitating a fresh approach to audience engagement. This key insight emerged from a recent panel discussion at a prominent industry summit in Los Angeles, where marketing leaders from diverse companies like Archrival, TikTok, Spotify, Pinterest, AMC Global Media, and Lionsgate converged to share their perspectives. Moderated by Variety's publisher, Dea Lawrence, the conversation underscored the growing significance of the creator economy in connecting consumers with content and experiences.

A central theme of the discussion revolved around the shift from meticulously crafted, gatekept marketing campaigns to a more collaborative and participatory model, especially evident on platforms like TikTok. Executives stressed that rather than strictly controlling narratives, studios and creators must empower fans to interpret and share content. Dawn Yang of TikTok highlighted the immense volume of user-generated content related to TV and film, showcasing the deep engagement fueled by this co-creation. This sentiment was echoed by Lionsgate's Briana McElroy, who revealed her company's strategy of hiring fans to produce authentic TikTok content, recognizing that genuine fan expression resonates more powerfully than corporate attempts to replicate it. Ben Harms of Archrival emphasized that future successful brands will be those that genuinely enrich consumers' lives by building ecosystems of experiences and human connections that transcend simple attention-grabbing tactics, citing Spotify as a prime example of this value-driven approach.

Furthermore, the panel delved into the evolving understanding of audience behavior, particularly among younger demographics. Sara Pollack of Pinterest illustrated how fans actively seek inspiration to transform their passions into real-world moments, as seen in the platform's partnership with Warner Bros. for "Practical Magic 2," which facilitated interactive, tangible experiences for Gen Z. Jenny Haggard from Spotify challenged marketers to move beyond broad generalizations of "Gen Z," advocating for a focus on life stages as a more accurate predictor of behavior. She also debunked the myth that young audiences are averse to long-form content, arguing instead that their preference lies in quality, regardless of duration. Kim Granito of AMC Global Media concluded by stressing marketers' responsibility to create diverse and accessible pathways for fans to engage with entertainment on their own terms, recognizing the varied ways in which passion for intellectual property is expressed.

The current marketing paradigm demands authenticity, engagement, and a deep understanding of audience behavior. By embracing fan participation, fostering genuine connections, and delivering high-quality content, brands can cultivate lasting relationships and thrive in this dynamic digital era. This forward-thinking approach not only acknowledges the power of the audience but also empowers them, creating a more vibrant and interconnected entertainment ecosystem.
