Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast has unveiled an ambitious plan for its beloved tabletop card game, Magic: The Gathering, confirming three new mainline sets for 2027 and an expanded schedule for its MagicCon events. This announcement, made during MagicCon: Amsterdam, signifies a significant leap forward for the franchise, promising players fresh narratives, diverse planes, and more opportunities to connect through global conventions.

The three new mainline sets, designed to initiate a brand-new story arc within the expansive Magic Multiverse, are titled "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm," "Kamigawa: Titanbreach," and "Zhalfir." These core releases will be supplemented by three additional Universes Beyond sets, which are collaborations with external intellectual properties like Paramount, Disney, and Marvel. These collaborative sets are scheduled for release in April, August, and November of 2027, completing the year's exciting lineup.

Each of the newly announced mainline sets introduces players to unique worlds and conflicts. "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm," set to launch on February 5, 2027, delves into an aquatic plane inhabited by merfolk, seals, and homarids. The narrative explores simmering tensions between two warring underwater kingdoms, promising a rich, immersive experience beneath the waves.

Following in the summer, "Kamigawa: Titanbreach" will arrive on June 4, 2027. This set marks a dramatic collision between two distinct Magic planes: Ikoria, known for its monstrous creatures, and the technologically advanced and spiritually rich Kamigawa. Players will witness the inhabitants of Kamigawa uniting to defend their home against the formidable threats from Ikoria that have crash-landed on their world.

Concluding the mainline releases for 2027 is "Zhalfir," scheduled for October 1. This set heralds the grand return of the kingdom of Zhalfir, which re-emerges as its own plane within the multiverse. The story will center on Zhalfir's vibrant, ancient magic and its people's journey to redefine their place in the Multiverse. Notably, the set will feature the return of Teferi Akosa, a master of chronomancy, engaging both long-time fans and new players alike.

Beyond the game's expansive lore and gameplay, Wizards of the Coast is also significantly expanding its global event series. After this year's final MagicCon event in Atlanta from November 13-15, the 2027 calendar will feature four MagicCon events worldwide. These include gatherings in Detroit from February 26-28, Tokyo from May 14-16, Las Vegas from August 27-29, and a return to Amsterdam from December 3-5. This expanded schedule reflects the growing global community and the publisher's commitment to fostering player engagement.

In addition to these announcements, Wizards of the Coast provided a sneak peek at "Reality Fracture" during MagicCon: Amsterdam. This upcoming October release is poised to conclude the story arc that began with the "Wilds of Eldraine" set in 2023, bringing a highly anticipated resolution to an ongoing narrative.

The upcoming year promises a wealth of new content and expanded opportunities for the global community of Magic: The Gathering. With three new mainline sets introducing compelling storylines and an increased number of MagicCon events, players worldwide can look forward to deeper immersion and greater engagement with their favorite card game. The blend of new narratives, cross-IP collaborations, and accessible global events ensures that Magic: The Gathering remains a vibrant and evolving experience for all.
